BG/BRG Klosterneuburg (Bundesgymnasium und Bundesrealgymnasium Klosterneuburg, or Gymnasium Klosterneuburg) is a public grammar school in Klosterneuburg near Vienna, founded in 1902. About 1250 students aged 10-18 and 130 teachers, according to the school's own figures for the 2021-2022 school year. Two branches: a language branch (Gymnasium) and a science branch (Realgymnasium); the language branch has run a Bilingual Programme for about 20 years, with 50 places per year group. Since 2010 the school has been an IB World School and, in its own words, one of six public grammar schools in Austria offering the IB Diploma ("one of only six public schools in Austria"). Bilingual Programme students take both the Austrian Reifeprüfung (Matura) and the IB Diploma in their last two years. The school names the language of instruction directly: the school as a whole teaches in German to the Austrian curriculum, bilingual classes introduce English step by step, and the IB programme is taught entirely in English ("The IB Diploma Programme is taught exclusively in English"). A phone-free school (handy FREIE SCHULE), with partner schools in Bulgaria, Germany, Great Britain and the United States.

About the fees Tuition is free: the school notes that the IB at private international schools is expensive, whereas here "Da das IB am Gymnasium Klosterneuburg vom Land Niederösterreich gefördert wird, fallen für SchülerInnen des IB nur der freiwillige monatliche Vereinsbeitrag von 50 EUR und einmalige Prüfungsgebühren (zurzeit 534 EUR) an" (since the IB is funded by the state of Lower Austria, IB students pay only a voluntary monthly association fee of 50 EUR and a one-time examination fee, currently 534 EUR).
Admissions The school admits foreign students: for the IB programme "knowledge of German is not required for non-Austrian pupils". The main legal condition is residence in the school's catchment area: central Klosterneuburg and the surrounding cadastral districts (Höflein, Kierling, Kritzendorf, Maria Gugging, Weidling, Weidlingbach/Scheiblingstein, St Andrä Wördern); for the IB it says "Pupils must be resident in Klosterneuburg with a legal guardian". The IB also requires the ability to study exclusively in English, a very good previous academic record and a written entrance assessment; Austrian pupils must also meet the Austrian curriculum requirements. Priority goes to pupils who completed the Bilingual Programme in the lower school; external applicants are accepted subject to places. Applications for the IB branch (Grades 11-12, ages 16-18) or Pre-IB (Grades 9-10, ages 14-16) go to the Bilingual Programme office by the end of December before entry. For Year 1 (age 10): online pre-registration in January, an interview with the head or teachers in February and a consultation procedure for the bilingual class.
Stages and year groups Grades 5-12. Eight years of Gymnasium: Years 1-8 in Austrian numbering (Grades 5-12), ages 10-18. Lower school (1-4) and upper school (5-8). A language branch (Gymnasium) with the Bilingual Programme and a science branch (Realgymnasium). In the Bilingual Programme English is introduced from Year 1, and after Year 4 students can follow lessons taught entirely in English. In December of Year 6 (Grade 10) students in the bilingual upper school decide whether to take the IB. Years 5-6 are Pre-IB (ages 14-16), Years 7-8 the IB Diploma Programme (ages 16-18) in English, alongside the Austrian Reifeprüfung (Matura): graduates receive both qualifications. The written Matura in mathematics and German is taken in January of the final year, and foreign languages are credited from the IB exams in May. Austrian pupils may take individual IB Certificates without the full diploma.

What stands behind each entry

IBInternational Baccalaureate

A Swiss non-profit, working since 1968. Its programmes are among the most widely recognised school programmes in the world. Authorisation is granted stage by stage, so a school with the final stage does not necessarily run the younger ones; which stages this school holds is set out in the line below.

What the badge means for this school. The school is allowed to run this programme and to award its certificate. This is a confirmation of the programme, not a judgement on the school as a whole. The entry stands in the organisation's public register - anyone can check it. At this school: DP (ages 16-19). DP is the final stage, ages 16 to 19: six subjects plus a compulsory core of theory of knowledge, an extended essay and CAS. The diploma is accepted by universities all over the world, and in a number of countries it counts for admission on the same footing as the local leaving certificate.

National programme

The state school programme of the country the school stands in: it is set by that country's ministry of education, which also licenses the school and awards the leaving certificate. That certificate is used for entry to local universities, and abroad it is matched to the local one.

What this means for this school. This entry does not count towards the score, and that is deliberate. Every lawful school in a country works to the national programme, so on its own it tells one school apart from no other - unlike the French, German or Russian programmes, which are carried abroad and confirmed by the register of their organisation. We show it because a parent needs to know what programme their child is taught and what certificate the child will get. Counting it would lift the whole ranking at once and still tell nobody apart.

No reviews yet. The community rating counts towards the score once a school has five verified reviews - until then we do not show a zero, so as not to mislead.

"Scored on disclosed data" stands where we count only what the school has written about itself on its own site: exams and destinations, safety and wellbeing, teaching staff, facilities, clubs and activities. A low score here means the school does not write about this, not that the school does not have it: a school with good security and a sparse site will score low. A school can fill in its profile, and the score will be counted again.
The score is counted from 8 of the 9 criteria.Only those with checkable data count: programmes and accreditations from official registers, the fee from a published price list. Where it says "scored on the median", the school has no data and the middle of the list is put in its place, so that a gap gives no advantage. Admissions, teaching staff and reviews come in as their data arrives. The full methodology →
