The British International School of Timișoara (BIST) is a private British-style international school in the north of Timișoara for children aged 4 to 18, from Reception to Year 13. The language of instruction is English, as the school states directly; Romanian is taught by local teachers, and from Year 3 students add German, Spanish or French. Up to Year 9 the school follows the National Curriculum of England with Cambridge programmes in English, Mathematics and Science (Checkpoint exams in Year 6 and Year 9), Year 10-11 follow Cambridge IGCSE, and in Year 12-13 students choose the IB Diploma Programme or A-Levels. The school is an authorised IB World School for the Diploma Programme, a registered Cambridge International School and describes itself as an approved Pearson Edexcel Academic Qualifications Centre. Classes have at most 22 students, and in Primary a teacher works with a teaching assistant. The campus, a historic building plus a 2023 facility, can accommodate approximately 900 students. Graduates go on to universities in the UK, the Netherlands, Spain, Italy, Germany, the USA, Hong Kong, China and Romania. In summer the school runs a British Summer School for children aged 4-12.

The fee covers lessons Monday to Friday from 8:30 to 15:30, textbooks and workbooks, materials, Cambridge exam fees in Year 6 for English and Mathematics, and clubs until 16:00.
Admissions The school admits children aged 4 to 18 throughout the year when places are available in the year group; otherwise children go on a waiting list. Steps: a visit and meeting with the admissions team, the enrolment form and documents (birth certificate or child's passport, parents' IDs, reports and references from previous schools, medical letter), the enrolment fee, then a discussion with the School Counsellor and an interview with the Head of School; sometimes a trial day. From Year 3 to Year 12 there are entry assessments in English and Mathematics, and for Year 12 (IB Diploma) also in relevant subjects; Year 13 entry is only by transfer from another IB World School with an identical subject choice. The expected English level rises with age: at least lower intermediate in Year 7 and advanced in Year 10-12. Students with insufficient English get free EAL support of 2 to 5 lessons a week. The admission policy states that all applications are given equal treatment regardless of gender, ethnicity, nationality, culture or religious beliefs. The first 6 weeks are a trial period.
Stages and year groups Grades Reception, Year 1-13. Reception (from age 4) follows the Early Years Foundation Stage. Year 1-6 follow Cambridge Primary in English, Mathematics and Science and the National Curriculum of England in other subjects, with Cambridge Primary Checkpoint in Year 6. Year 12-13 follow the IB Diploma Programme or Cambridge International A Level; IB Diploma entry requires at least six IGCSE grades A* to C, three of them A* or A. All students study Romanian following the national curriculum. The school states that its qualifications can be recognised in Romania through the national equivalation process.

IBInternational Baccalaureate
A Swiss non-profit, working since 1968. Its programmes are among the most widely recognised school programmes in the world. Authorisation is granted stage by stage, so a school with the final stage does not necessarily run the younger ones; which stages this school holds is set out in the line below.
What the badge means for this school. The school is allowed to run this programme and to award its certificate. This is a confirmation of the programme, not a judgement on the school as a whole. The entry stands in the organisation's public register - anyone can check it. At this school: DP (ages 16-19). DP is the final stage, ages 16 to 19: six subjects plus a compulsory core of theory of knowledge, an extended essay and CAS. The diploma is accepted by universities all over the world, and in a number of countries it counts for admission on the same footing as the local leaving certificate.

Part of the University of Cambridge. It allows a school to teach the Cambridge programmes and to enter pupils for the exams. There are four stages and they are authorised separately: primary, lower secondary, IGCSE and A Level. If the stages are known they are named in the line below; if that line is missing, the school does not publish them, and the Cambridge registry does not show stages either - it gives only the name of the centre, the country and whether private candidates are accepted. Cambridge calls what it does registration rather than accreditation, and the network holds about ten thousand schools.
What the badge means for this school. The school is allowed to run this programme and to award its certificate. This is a confirmation of the programme, not a judgement on the school as a whole. The entry stands in the organisation's public register - anyone can check it. At this school: Primary (ages 5-11), Lower Secondary (ages 11-14), IGCSE (ages 14-16), A-Level (ages 16-18). Primary is the primary stage, ages 5 to 11: English, mathematics and science to Cambridge syllabuses. At the end of the stage a school may run the optional Checkpoint test, which is marked in Cambridge. Lower Secondary is the middle stage, ages 11 to 14, with the same optional Checkpoint test at the end. IGCSE means exams at around Year 10 or 11, the British counterpart of a lower secondary leaving certificate. A-Level is the senior years, and their results are what British and many other universities admit on.

A scheme of the UK Department for Education: a school abroad is inspected against the standards for independent schools in England, including safeguarding and the standards for boarding. The inspections are done by independent inspectorates approved by the department, and the inspectorates themselves are monitored annually by Ofsted. The reports are published in full on the government website.
What the badge means for this school. The school has been through this organisation's accreditation. It was judged as a whole: governance, safeguarding, staff, premises, teaching. The entry stands in the organisation's public register - anyone can check it.

An association of British schools abroad with a quality inspection of its own. It has nine membership categories, and the word "accredited" appears in seven of them, although COBIS does its own inspection in one: in the rest it recognises an accreditation granted by somebody else.
What the badge means for this school. The school belongs to this organisation but has not been through its accreditation. The difference matters: membership is usually paid for and has no external inspection behind it. The entry is confirmed in the organisation's open directory.

A nurse is available throughout the school day and checks Reception children every morning; there is a school doctor. A School Counsellor supports pupils, families and staff. There are separate anti-bullying (mentioning CCTV), health and safety, fire, earthquake, lockdown and e-safety policies.
Reviews
No reviews yet. The community rating counts towards the score once a school has five verified reviews - until then we do not show a zero, so as not to mislead.

A low score here means the school does not write about this, not that the school does not have it: a school with good security and a sparse site will score low. A school can fill in its profile, and the score will be counted again.
The score is counted from 7 of the 9 criteria.Only those with checkable data count: programmes and accreditations from official registers, the fee from a published price list. Where it says "scored on the median", the school has no data and the middle of the list is put in its place, so that a gap gives no advantage. Admissions, teaching staff and reviews come in as their data arrives.
