Colegio Mataespesa (the school also calls itself Mataespesa School) is a bilingual state-funded private school in Alpedrete, in the sierra outside Madrid, opened in 2011 and part of Grupo Montessori, which has been running since 1994. There is a lot of English and it is set out stage by stage: in the infant years 80 per cent of subjects are in English, in primary 60 per cent of the day, and in secondary five more hours of English a week are added along with subjects taught in English. The school is itself a Cambridge exam centre and prepares pupils from year 2 of primary; by its own figures, in year 6 of primary 99 per cent of those entered get the B1, in secondary everyone reaches B2, 70 per cent reach C1 and 20 per cent C2. The main news: in December 2025 the school received IB authorisation for the Diploma Programme and runs it from the 2026-27 year, in Spanish; the Diploma has six subjects - language and literature, an acquired language (English or French), business management, science, mathematics and music, with music replaceable by a second science or a second language. The school has its own heated pool, outdoor tennis courts and a large sports hall, and federated football teams in primary and the first stage of secondary. The school day differs by stage: infant 9:00 to 16:50 with a break, primary 9:00 to 16:50, secondary 8:50 to 17:00, the baccalaureate 8:50 to 14:50.

About the fees The school publishes no tuition fee: it is a state-funded private centre, the teaching is paid for by the Community of Madrid, and the school itself writes only about "servicios complementarios de carácter voluntario, no discriminatorio y no lucrativo". Their tariffs are posted as a separate PDF for each year - "Tarifas y Condiciones de Actividades Complementarios" for 2023/24, 2024/25 and 2025/26 - and not one amount appears in the page text. Of the paid items the school names the canteen with its own kitchen, the school bus (seven routes: Pozuelo - Majadahonda - Las Rozas, Torrelodones - Parque Lagos - Las Matas, Villalba - Hoyo de Manzanares, Colmenarejo - Galapagar, Villalba - Moralzarzal, Alpedrete - Collado Mediano - El Escorial, Alpedrete - Becerril - Guadarrama - Los Molinos) and extracurricular activities.
Admissions Admission runs in three steps and through the state procedure: first an interview with the school leadership, then an application within the dates set by the Community of Madrid, and after the admitted lists are published, submission of documents. For the 2026-27 year the ordinary application window ran from 11 to 25 March 2026. The school refers directly to the Community of Madrid rules and to the decree on admission to publicly funded centres. It names neither an entrance test nor any English requirement.
Stages and year groups Grades infant from age 3 - baccalaureate, up to 18. The school writes that it "admite alumnos de los 3 años hasta los 18 y abarca las etapas de infantil, primaria, secundaria y bachillerato". The timetable differs by stage: infant 9:00-12:30 and 14:00-16:50, primary 9:00-13:05 and 14:35-16:50, secondary 8:50-13:00 and 14:15-17:00, the baccalaureate 8:50-14:50. After lessons, from 17:00 to 18:00, there is "Estudio Dirigido" - a study hour with a school teacher.

What stands behind each entry

IBInternational Baccalaureate

A Swiss non-profit, working since 1968. Its programmes are among the most widely recognised school programmes in the world. Authorisation is granted stage by stage, so a school with the final stage does not necessarily run the younger ones; which stages this school holds is set out in the line below.

What the badge means for this school. The school is allowed to run this programme and to award its certificate. This is a confirmation of the programme, not a judgement on the school as a whole. The entry stands in the organisation's public register - anyone can check it. At this school: DP (ages 16-19). DP is the final stage, ages 16 to 19: six subjects plus a compulsory core of theory of knowledge, an extended essay and CAS. The diploma is accepted by universities all over the world, and in a number of countries it counts for admission on the same footing as the local leaving certificate.

National programme

The state school programme of the country the school stands in: it is set by that country's ministry of education, which also licenses the school and awards the leaving certificate. That certificate is used for entry to local universities, and abroad it is matched to the local one.

What this means for this school. This entry does not count towards the score, and that is deliberate. Every lawful school in a country works to the national programme, so on its own it tells one school apart from no other - unlike the French, German or Russian programmes, which are carried abroad and confirmed by the register of their organisation. We show it because a parent needs to know what programme their child is taught and what certificate the child will get. Counting it would lift the whole ranking at once and still tell nobody apart.

The school publishes nothing about where its leavers go: no share going on to university, no exam results, no list of universities.

Reviews

No reviews yet. The community rating counts towards the score once a school has five verified reviews - until then we do not show a zero, so as not to mislead.

"Scored on disclosed data" stands where we count only what the school has written about itself on its own site: exams and destinations, safety and wellbeing, teaching staff, facilities, clubs and activities. A low score here means the school does not write about this, not that the school does not have it: a school with good security and a sparse site will score low. A school can fill in its profile, and the score will be counted again.
The score is counted from 7 of the 9 criteria.Only those with checkable data count: programmes and accreditations from official registers, the fee from a published price list. Where it says "scored on the median", the school has no data and the middle of the list is put in its place, so that a gap gives no advantage. Admissions, teaching staff and reviews come in as their data arrives. The full methodology →
