Doukas School (in Greek Εκπαιδευτήρια Δούκα) is a private all-through school in Marousi, in northern Athens, from a bilingual pre-school to the lyceum. It was founded in 1917 as Palladio Lykeio in the Kypseli district, has been in Marousi since 1970 and is now part of the international Cognita schools group. The core is the Greek national curriculum (Dimotiko, Gymnasio, Geniko Lykeio with preparation for the Panhellenic exams, including Modern and Ancient Greek), and in the upper grades international programmes run alongside it: the IB Diploma Programme (since 2003), Pearson Edexcel International A Levels (the school has taught British A Levels since 1985), the BTEC Foundation in Art, Design & Media Practice (since 2008) and the US Dual Diploma. The language of instruction is inferred from the school's pages: the core course is taught in Greek, the pre-school is bilingual (Greek and English, with a Greek-speaking and an English-speaking teacher in each group), and the school explicitly describes the IB and BTEC as taught in English; in Dimotiko and Gymnasio some subjects (music, Digital Skills, technology, STEM) are also taught in English. On its English home page the school gives 1700 students.

Admissions New students are admitted from October to May where places are available; priority goes to siblings of current students and children of alumni. Parents first complete a form and meet the admissions office, then the child has an introductory meeting and assessment: basic skills for pre-schoolers, an assessment by a special educator for grade 1, and written work in Greek language, mathematics, essay writing and English for older grades. Entry to the IB is after the first year of lyceum, by a diagnostic English test and a set of documents: reports, language certificates, a teacher's recommendation, a copy of an identity card or passport. The website does not say whether the school admits children without Greek citizenship.
Stages and year groups Grades Pre-Kindergarten - Lykeio (grade 12), IB DP. Stages: bilingual Pronipio and Nipiagogeio (from age three), Dimotiko (grades 1-6), Gymnasio (7-9), Geniko Lykeio (10-12) leading to the Apolytirio and the Panhellenic exams. After the first year of lyceum a student chooses between the Greek lyceum and the two-year IB Diploma Programme in English; the school writes that the IB diploma is «ισότιμο με το Απολυτήριο του Ελληνικού Γενικού Λυκείου» - «equivalent to the Greek General Lyceum certificate». For those choosing the IB there is a PRE-IB preparatory course with three IGCSE subjects in the first year of lyceum. International A Levels (Pearson Edexcel) take two years and can be combined with the Greek lyceum through the COMBO programme; the BTEC Foundation in Art, Design & Media Practice (Pearson, Level 3/4) runs in the afternoon alongside the IB, A Levels or the lyceum; the US Dual Diploma with Columbia School adds an American high school diploma to the Greek one.

IBInternational Baccalaureate
A Swiss non-profit, working since 1968. Its programmes are among the most widely recognised school programmes in the world. Authorisation is granted stage by stage, so a school with the final stage does not necessarily run the younger ones; which stages this school holds is set out in the line below.
What the badge means for this school. The school is allowed to run this programme and to award its certificate. This is a confirmation of the programme, not a judgement on the school as a whole. The entry stands in the organisation's public register - anyone can check it. At this school: DP (ages 16-19). DP is the final stage, ages 16 to 19: six subjects plus a compulsory core of theory of knowledge, an extended essay and CAS. The diploma is accepted by universities all over the world, and in a number of countries it counts for admission on the same footing as the local leaving certificate.

It gives a school approved centre status: that means Pearson exams can be sat in the school itself. What is checked is the premises, the equipment, the secure storage of papers and the presence of trained invigilators.
What the badge means for this school. The school can run Pearson exams on its own premises. The status says nothing about teaching, about results or about the school itself: any school able to run an exam securely holds it. The entry stands in the organisation's public register - anyone can check it. At this school: A-Level (ages 16-18). A-Level is the senior years, and their results are what British and many other universities admit on.
Register to check for yourself, and the full guide →BTEC
A British vocational qualification from Pearson: not an academic course with an exam at the end, but a programme of practical assignments in a particular trade, from engineering and business to art and sport.
What this means for this school. Teaching and assessment work differently from A-level: instead of written exams there is a run of practical assignments marked by the school, while Pearson checks the school itself and samples the work. British universities do accept BTEC, but not all of them and not for every course: level 3 carries the same UCAS points as A-level, and that is what a family aiming at a particular university should look at. For a child who needs the classic academic route, BTEC is not a replacement for A-level but a different path.
National programme
The state school programme of the country the school stands in: it is set by that country's ministry of education, which also licenses the school and awards the leaving certificate. That certificate is used for entry to local universities, and abroad it is matched to the local one.
What this means for this school. This entry does not count towards the score, and that is deliberate. Every lawful school in a country works to the national programme, so on its own it tells one school apart from no other - unlike the French, German or Russian programmes, which are carried abroad and confirmed by the register of their organisation. We show it because a parent needs to know what programme their child is taught and what certificate the child will get. Counting it would lift the whole ranking at once and still tell nobody apart.
Cognitaschool network
A group of schools launched in 2004; the legal entity in the footer of the site is Cognita Holdings Limited. The site names 90 schools in 21 countries, 14 curricula and more than 22,000 staff, and the numbers agree on all the pages read. The section on a school joining the group speaks of working with the owners of schools and of integrating the school, but does not say outright whether the school passes into ownership; the word "franchise" does not appear on the site. The majority owner of Cognita itself is named as Jacobs Holding AG.
What this means for this school. The network owns or operates the school. Its accreditation and programme authorisation the school obtains separately, in its own name.

The school gives a ratio of one teacher to seven students. Every pre-school group has two teachers at all times, one Greek-speaking and one English-speaking. International A Levels groups usually have fewer than ten students.

No reviews yet. The community rating counts towards the score once a school has five verified reviews - until then we do not show a zero, so as not to mislead.

A low score here means the school does not write about this, not that the school does not have it: a school with good security and a sparse site will score low. A school can fill in its profile, and the score will be counted again.
The score is counted from 7 of the 9 criteria.Only those with checkable data count: programmes and accreditations from official registers, the fee from a published price list. Where it says "scored on the median", the school has no data and the middle of the list is put in its place, so that a gap gives no advantage. Admissions, teaching staff and reviews come in as their data arrives.
