El Montgó is a bilingual Waldorf school in Jávea on the Alicante coast, on calle Boix in the Trencall area. Teaching is in English and Spanish: in kindergarten both languages come through rhythm, play and repetition, and in free play the child chooses the language, while in primary school half the curriculum is in English and half in Spanish; Valencian is taught by a separate teacher. There are two stages: two mixed-age kindergarten classes from three to six and six primary classes. Lessons are organised the Waldorf way: main lessons run in two-hour blocks for three to four weeks, the children make their own subject books, and the class teacher usually takes the class through the whole of primary school. The curriculum includes literature, the history of civilisations, natural sciences, mathematics, music, painting, theatre, eurythmy, knitting, woodwork and gardening. The school publishes its staff by name: each class has its own tutor, there are native English teachers and specialists in circus and PE, art, handicrafts and Valencian. In summer there is a morning summer school outdoors. Fees are monthly, eleven instalments a year.

About the fees Fees are charged in eleven instalments from September to July: kindergarten 513 euros a month, primary school 523 euros a month, that is 5643 and 5753 euros a year. On top of the fee: a registration fee of 900 euros - a single non-refundable payment on enrolment, one per family - a snack charge of 90 euros a term and materials at 390 euros a year. Discounts: 15 per cent for the second child, 20 for the third.
Admissions The school bases admission on two conversations. The first introduces the family to the basics of Waldorf education, the school and its premises; the second is with the class tutor and covers pedagogical and practical questions. The decision is taken by an admissions committee: the pedagogical director, the head of studies and the tutor of the new pupil's class together with the administration; the school takes those who, in its words, understand and share Waldorf education. Before enrolling, a tour must be booked through the office to see an ordinary school day. On enrolment a non-refundable registration fee of 900 euros is paid, one per family. The school asks parents to take part in school life and to support its rules at home, down to limiting screens. The school writes nothing about foreign pupils or special conditions for them.
Stages and year groups Grades Infantil ages 3-6 - Primaria (6 grades), to age 12. The stages: kindergarten - two mixed-age classes from three to six, the Sol and Luna classes - and a primary school of six classes, where the class teacher usually takes the children from the first grade to the end. Main lessons run in two-hour blocks for three to four weeks; in kindergarten each day of the week has its own activity, such as bread-baking day or watercolour day. The school has no secondary stage.

What stands behind each entry

NEASCNew England Association of Schools and Colleges

An American accreditation working since 1885. For international schools it uses an approach where the visitors look first at live lessons rather than at folders of paperwork: the team works in the school for about a week. It is the only one here whose public directory honestly separates accredited schools from candidates.

What the badge means for this school. The school has been through this organisation's accreditation. It was judged as a whole: governance, safeguarding, staff, premises, teaching. The entry stands in the organisation's public register - anyone can check it.

"Scored on disclosed data" stands where we count only what the school has written about itself on its own site: exams and destinations, safety and wellbeing, teaching staff, facilities, clubs and activities. A low score here means the school does not write about this, not that the school does not have it: a school with good security and a sparse site will score low. A school can fill in its profile, and the score will be counted again.
The score is counted from 8 of the 9 criteria.Only those with checkable data count: programmes and accreditations from official registers, the fee from a published price list. Where it says "scored on the median", the school has no data and the middle of the list is put in its place, so that a gap gives no advantage. Admissions, teaching staff and reviews come in as their data arrives. The full methodology →
