Ikast-Brande Gymnasium is a Danish upper secondary school in Ikast with 683 students and three tracks: STX (3 years, studentereksamen), HF (2 years) and the international IB track, a one-year Pre-IB and the two-year IB Diploma Programme (according to the class table on the website, three Pre-IB classes and one class in each IB year). On the IB track all subjects except the mother tongue are taught in English; STX and HF are taught in Danish. The school belongs to Danske Science Gymnasier, has long prepared students for science olympiads and is an elite sports school: morning training three times a week without missing lessons. According to the school it is the only IB school in Denmark approved by the World Academy of Sport as an athlete friendly education centre; the IB Sport programme offers training in handball, football, basketball, golf, badminton and volleyball. IB students go on exchanges to a partner school in Germany and to Mexico, attend Model United Nations conferences in Northern Europe and a student conference in Dar es Salaam. For IB students whose parents live outside Denmark the school has its own supervised residences. International School Ikast-Brande stands next door, and the two schools work in partnership.

Admissions Entry to the IB Diploma from the Danish system requires a completed Pre-IB or first year of STX, HHX or HTX: at least 4 in English, maths and Danish (if Danish is chosen) with at least one written grade of 7, and a passed Danish-History exam with at least 4. From other systems, including international schools in Denmark, completed IGCSEs, or 10-11 years of school, or the MYP with at least 28 points, plus a reference from the previous school. Pre-IB entry from abroad requires at least 10 years of school with passing grades in English, maths and science and English at B1 or above; folkeskole graduates apply via Optagelse.dk under STX requirements. The decision is holistic, based on records, an online interview and, if needed, a test; not all applicants are interviewed, with housing availability, nationality and gender mix, sports ability and age taken into account. EU citizens obtain an EU residence permit after arrival; according to the school, non-EU citizens can only study on the IB if their parents are moving to Denmark. For 2026-2027 the IB intake and the residences are full, with a few Pre-IB places left for students who do not need housing.

What stands behind each entry

IBInternational Baccalaureate

A Swiss non-profit, working since 1968. Its programmes are among the most widely recognised school programmes in the world. Authorisation is granted stage by stage, so a school with the final stage does not necessarily run the younger ones; which stages this school holds is set out in the line below.

What the badge means for this school. The school is allowed to run this programme and to award its certificate. This is a confirmation of the programme, not a judgement on the school as a whole. The entry stands in the organisation's public register - anyone can check it. At this school: DP (ages 16-19). DP is the final stage, ages 16 to 19: six subjects plus a compulsory core of theory of knowledge, an extended essay and CAS. The diploma is accepted by universities all over the world, and in a number of countries it counts for admission on the same footing as the local leaving certificate.

National programme

The state school programme of the country the school stands in: it is set by that country's ministry of education, which also licenses the school and awards the leaving certificate. That certificate is used for entry to local universities, and abroad it is matched to the local one.

What this means for this school. This entry does not count towards the score, and that is deliberate. Every lawful school in a country works to the national programme, so on its own it tells one school apart from no other - unlike the French, German or Russian programmes, which are carried abroad and confirmed by the register of their organisation. We show it because a parent needs to know what programme their child is taught and what certificate the child will get. Counting it would lift the whole ranking at once and still tell nobody apart.

Campus: Since 1975 the school has occupied a building by the architects Friis and Moltke: a three-winged brick and concrete building around a large central courtyard with a spacious common hall. It has classrooms and subject rooms, project rooms, a study centre, a multi-purpose hall, a canteen, a sports hall, band rehearsal rooms, a climbing wall, a fitness room and cross-training facilities; PE uses the nearby Ikast Svømmehal public pool. The building is wheelchair accessible with step-free access inside. For IB students the school rents rooms in its own IBG Dorm, five minutes away by bike (the Frisenborg complex next to the public pool), and in the Green Student Apartments near the station, with adult supervision; athletes live at the partner Sportstar College with full board.

"Scored on disclosed data" stands where we count only what the school has written about itself on its own site: exams and destinations, safety and wellbeing, teaching staff, facilities, clubs and activities. A low score here means the school does not write about this, not that the school does not have it: a school with good security and a sparse site will score low. A school can fill in its profile, and the score will be counted again.
The score is counted from 7 of the 9 criteria.Only those with checkable data count: programmes and accreditations from official registers, the fee from a published price list. Where it says "scored on the median", the school has no data and the middle of the list is put in its place, so that a gap gives no advantage. Admissions, teaching staff and reviews come in as their data arrives. The full methodology →
