Kaleide International School is a small family-run school in La Laguna on Tenerife, opened in 2021, and it is about a different way of learning rather than about a programme with a certificate. The school is bilingual, takes children from three to twelve and is built for 60 places: 25 in the preschool and 35 in the primary. Its approach was not put together from nothing - before opening, the founders studied thirty unusually built schools around the world and talked to teachers and families. The school describes its setup like this: active experiential learning and democratic education, the child's own rhythm ahead of the timetable, learning through play, real projects, nature and working together, with the child's voice taking part in how a lesson is built. It does not use marks and tests as the measure: it speaks of intrinsic motivation and autonomy, and the adult-led part of the day is balanced by the part the child leads. As models it names Reggio Emilia, Montessori, forest schools and democratic education - as sources, not as a programme it is accredited for. Its rooms have names of their own: Spiral, Allegro, Fractal, Wabi-sabi, Meraki and the outdoor space, with greenery around. With NEASC the school has held Candidate status since April 2020, and on the Spanish side it is an authorised foreign school under the Canary Islands department of education. It ends at twelve, so after it a child moves to another school, and the school does not write where.

About the fees The school publishes its fees for 2026-2027 in its documentation and as a separate tariff table. Pre-school (ages 3-5) with lunch, from 8:00 to 16:00 - 525 euros a month in ten payments or 4985 euros in one yearly payment in June; primary (ages 6-11) with lunch, from 8:00 to 16:00 - 585 euros a month or 5555 euros a year. For three-year-olds in the settling-in period there is an option without lunch, until 13:00 - 395 euros a month or 3750 a year. The fee covers before care from 8:00, after care until 16:00, lunch, swimming lessons and transport for outings. Sibling discounts apply to the lowest fee: 15, 20 and 25 per cent; paying the year in advance also brings a discount, and the school is open to agreeing a payment schedule with each family.
Admissions First the family comes for a tour and an information interview; if it then wants to join the project, the school invites it to a second interview - in more depth about the school's approach and the family's needs. To formalise admission the family completes the enrolment form and pays the registration fee; once places are confirmed, the school asks for the deposit and the supplies fee by set dates. Settling in is flexible: a parent can stay with the child until the child feels safe; the school does not require children to be potty-trained. Part-time attendance is not possible: under Spanish law a child must attend school every day. The school does not write about foreigners or citizenship.
Stages and year groups Grades ages 3-12: preschool and primary. Two stages: a preschool with 25 places and a primary with 35, 60 in all. The school ends at twelve - it has no middle or senior stage. The school is open from 9:00 to 14:00, Monday to Friday, with before care from 8:00 and after care from 14:00 to 16:00, both included in the fee; in preschool the doors are open for a relaxed entry from 8:45 to 9:40.

What stands behind each entry

NEASCNew England Association of Schools and Colleges

An American accreditation working since 1885. For international schools it uses an approach where the visitors look first at live lessons rather than at folders of paperwork: the team works in the school for about a week. It is the only one here whose public directory honestly separates accredited schools from candidates.

What the badge means for this school. The school is a candidate for accreditation by this organisation: the route has been started but not completed. Candidacy speaks of an application made and a file accepted for consideration, not of the outcome of an inspection, and the organisations themselves usually require schools to say that it does not guarantee accreditation. The candidacy is confirmed in the organisation's open directory.

Campus: The school occupies a renovated two-storey building of 660 square metres surrounded by 2700 square metres of gardens, in a quiet residential area of San Cristóbal de La Laguna, a ten-minute walk from the historic centre. Inside there are separate environments and rooms for movement, music, visual art, cooking and experiments, each with its own name: Spiral, Allegro (the music room), Fractal, Wabi-sabi, Meraki; all learning spaces have windows onto the garden and are easily rearranged. Materials are loose parts, Montessori and Waldorf. There is no sports hall or pool of its own: nearby are the Francisco Peraza municipal stadium, the San Benito pool and Parque de la Vega with a climbing wall and courts, and swimming lessons are included in the fee. Lunch is catering from local produce, also included. The school deliberately keeps no car park.

There is also a separate written policy for resolving disputes between parents and the school. The school names no psychologist, medical staff or security.

Reviews

No reviews yet. The community rating counts towards the score once a school has five verified reviews - until then we do not show a zero, so as not to mislead.

"Scored on disclosed data" stands where we count only what the school has written about itself on its own site: exams and destinations, safety and wellbeing, teaching staff, facilities, clubs and activities. A low score here means the school does not write about this, not that the school does not have it: a school with good security and a sparse site will score low. A school can fill in its profile, and the score will be counted again.
The score is counted from 8 of the 9 criteria.Only those with checkable data count: programmes and accreditations from official registers, the fee from a published price list. Where it says "scored on the median", the school has no data and the middle of the list is put in its place, so that a gap gives no advantage. Admissions, teaching staff and reviews come in as their data arrives. The full methodology →
