Romerike International School (RIS) is a private, not-for-profit international school for children aged 6-16 (grades 1-10) in Hvam, in Nes municipality north-east of Oslo. It is run by the Romerike International School Foundation, established in 2015; the school operates under the Independent Schools Act (Friskoleloven), receives state funding through Utdanningsdirektoratet and charges families a moderate fee. The primary school (grades 1-6) follows the IB PYP and the middle school (grades 7-10) the IB MYP, with the Personal Project in grade 10. The language of instruction is English, except for Norwegian and Spanish lessons; Norwegian gets as many hours as in a local school so that a student can move into the Norwegian system at any time, including grade 10. The school says it has over 200 students; most families have one or both parents who are Norwegian, but students are connected to more than 30 countries. The school is part of the UN schools network and builds learning around the Sustainable Development Goals, outdoor education and student wellbeing.

About the fees From 1 January 2026 the fee, at Utdanningsdirektoratet rates, is 4072.73 NOK per month for grades 1-10, invoiced from August over 11 months. It covers tuition, exercise books and textbook loans; food on trips, IT repairs and extra uniforms are charged separately. The sibling discount is 25% for the second child and 50% for the third and further children. The fee is set by the school board under Utdanningsdirektoratet rules.
Admissions The school is open to all children in grades 1 to 10: applications are made online through OpenApply and an automatic confirmation is sent. If there are more applicants than places, priority goes to children of staff, then siblings of current students, then children who attended school abroad (an international school), then by application date; others are placed on a waiting list. Once offered a place, the family confirms it within 7 days with a non-refundable administration fee of 2000 NOK. The first two weeks after starting are a period in which school and family decide whether the school is a good fit; parents sign a contract on conduct expectations. Withdrawal requires 3 months' notice. The school names no entrance tests or language requirements; English language learners are supported through immersion in class, and students with weak Norwegian get separate Norwegian language acquisition lessons.
Stages and year groups Grades 1-10. IB PYP in grades 1-6 (the school says it is authorised for the PYP) and IB MYP in grades 7-10 with the Personal Project in grade 10; the MYP has eight subject groups, including Norwegian language and literature, Norwegian and English language acquisition, and Spanish. Teaching is in English; Norwegian follows the national LK20 curriculum, four lessons a week in all grades. The programme page states the goal of MYP authorisation before August 2024 and the language policy calls the school an IB candidate school; the home page and the middle school section describe the MYP as a running programme. The school ends at grade 10; there is no upper secondary (videregående).

What stands behind each entry

IBInternational Baccalaureate

A Swiss non-profit, working since 1968. Its programmes are among the most widely recognised school programmes in the world. Authorisation is granted stage by stage, so a school with the final stage does not necessarily run the younger ones; which stages this school holds is set out in the line below.

What the badge means for this school. The school is allowed to run this programme and to award its certificate. This is a confirmation of the programme, not a judgement on the school as a whole. The entry stands in the organisation's public register - anyone can check it. At this school: PYP (ages 3-12). PYP is the primary stage, ages 3 to 12. It is not a set of subjects but a frame for the whole school: learning is built around lines of inquiry, and there are no exams at the end.

"Scored on disclosed data" stands where we count only what the school has written about itself on its own site: exams and destinations, safety and wellbeing, teaching staff, facilities, clubs and activities. A low score here means the school does not write about this, not that the school does not have it: a school with good security and a sparse site will score low. A school can fill in its profile, and the score will be counted again.
The score is counted from 8 of the 9 criteria.Only those with checkable data count: programmes and accreditations from official registers, the fee from a published price list. Where it says "scored on the median", the school has no data and the middle of the list is put in its place, so that a gap gives no advantage. Admissions, teaching staff and reviews come in as their data arrives. The full methodology →
