Skagerak International School, Tønsberg is the second campus of the not-for-profit Skagerak International School, opened in central Tønsberg, Norway's oldest town, by the Slottsfjellet hill. It teaches children aged 6-16: the primary school (PY1-PY6) and the middle school (MY1-MY4, up to grade 10). The middle school has been authorised for the IB MYP since January 2024; the primary school has been a candidate for the IB PYP since March 2023. The main language of instruction is English, and Norwegian is the school's second language: it is used for Norwegian language and literature and, in the primary school, for part of the PYP units; the campus itself calls its programme fully bilingual. French and Spanish are taught in the middle school. The school is designed for 220 children of more than 39 nationalities, with classes of up to 18-24 students. It operates under the private schools act, receives state funding and charges families a moderate fee. For continuing after grade 10, the school offers IB high school at its Sandefjord campus.

About the fees Fees for 2026 are the same for the primary (PY1-PY6) and middle (MY1-MY4) school: 22400 NOK for the spring term (January-April, 4 instalments of 5600 NOK) and the same for the autumn term (August-December), that is 44800 NOK per calendar year; payment in full or in 8 monthly instalments. Fees for 2027 will be revised from 1 January 2027 under Utdanningsdirektoratet rules; the ministry of education sets the maximum fee.
Admissions The school says its admissions are inclusive and non-discriminatory; applicants should wish to learn within the IB programme. For the school year starting in August, the first deadline is 1 March and the second 1 May; after that, places are allocated in order of receipt. If there are more applicants than places, priority is: current Skagerak students moving up; children of staff; children with previous international or English-language schooling; siblings of current students; others; ties are decided by a draw. Families are invited to a meeting with the principal or IB coordinator, and the place is secured with a signed contract. Applications must be renewed for each school year. Decisions follow the private schools act and can be appealed to the Statsforvalteren. International applicants are advised to check the requirements to enter Norway on the UDI website. Children new to Norwegian get Norwegian language acquisition lessons, and those with limited English get English language support.

What stands behind each entry

IBInternational Baccalaureate

A Swiss non-profit, working since 1968. Its programmes are among the most widely recognised school programmes in the world. Authorisation is granted stage by stage, so a school with the final stage does not necessarily run the younger ones; which stages this school holds is set out in the line below.

What the badge means for this school. The school is allowed to run this programme and to award its certificate. This is a confirmation of the programme, not a judgement on the school as a whole. The entry stands in the organisation's public register - anyone can check it. At this school: MYP (ages 11-16). MYP is the middle stage, ages 11 to 16. There are no exams here either; at the end an optional electronic assessment of pupils' work is possible.

"Scored on disclosed data" stands where we count only what the school has written about itself on its own site: exams and destinations, safety and wellbeing, teaching staff, facilities, clubs and activities. A low score here means the school does not write about this, not that the school does not have it: a school with good security and a sparse site will score low. A school can fill in its profile, and the score will be counted again.
The score is counted from 8 of the 9 criteria.Only those with checkable data count: programmes and accreditations from official registers, the fee from a published price list. Where it says "scored on the median", the school has no data and the middle of the list is put in its place, so that a gap gives no advantage. Admissions, teaching staff and reviews come in as their data arrives. The full methodology →
