Semente Compostela is a non-profit school in Santiago de Compostela on Rúa Moas de Abaixo, recognised by the Galician government and accredited by the American NEASC. It takes children from two to twelve, at the kindergarten and primary stages. What sets it apart: the whole day runs in Galician, and that is the language of instruction. The school belongs to the Escolas de Ensino Galego Semente - a non-profit social initiative launched by the Gentalha do Pichel association, which together with other similar projects aims to lay the groundwork for a future Galician national school. Its name is taken from the Escolas de Ensino Galego of the early twentieth century, created by the Irmandades da Fala and driven by Leandro Carré and Ánxel Casal. The school states its purpose itself: to give children the chance to be in the world without giving up their own identity, and to show that all cultures matter, large and small, and that one need not abandon a mother tongue in order to acquire new ones. It lists its principles as a set: a Galician school, a feminist school, a secular and scientific school, an international school, a transformative school, a community school, a school in nature, an inclusive school - and more than a school. English the school names as a language in which teaching and communication also take place, and it treats the children's multilingualism as a resource. Teaching is by projects, in mixed-age groups and without ordinary textbooks, with much time spent outdoors: the school has a vegetable garden, a yard and an outdoor classroom. Around the school the association runs clubs in traditional music and dance, games and drama for children aged 3 to 16, 4 camps a year and Galician-language meetings for children under 3. The school lives, in its own words, on the work of activists and on the contributions of supporters. What stands behind each entry

NEASCNew England Association of Schools and Colleges

An American accreditation working since 1885. For international schools it uses an approach where the visitors look first at live lessons rather than at folders of paperwork: the team works in the school for about a week. It is the only one here whose public directory honestly separates accredited schools from candidates.

What the badge means for this school. The school has been through this organisation's accreditation. It was judged as a whole: governance, safeguarding, staff, premises, teaching. The entry stands in the organisation's public register - anyone can check it.

National programme

The state school programme of the country the school stands in: it is set by that country's ministry of education, which also licenses the school and awards the leaving certificate. That certificate is used for entry to local universities, and abroad it is matched to the local one.

What this means for this school. This entry does not count towards the score, and that is deliberate. Every lawful school in a country works to the national programme, so on its own it tells one school apart from no other - unlike the French, German or Russian programmes, which are carried abroad and confirmed by the register of their organisation. We show it because a parent needs to know what programme their child is taught and what certificate the child will get. Counting it would lift the whole ranking at once and still tell nobody apart.

Exams and destinations from the school's official website

The school publishes nothing about where its leavers go: no share going on to university, no exam results, no list of universities.

The association runs 4 camps a year: in winter, at Carnival, in spring and in summer, in the mornings, for children aged 3 to 12 and, in its words, for all kinds of children, not only its own pupils. The programme has traditional games, cultural and nature routes, reading, art and music, and traditional rhythms; the main aim is the Galician language and culture. The school names neither prices nor the venue.

Reviews

No reviews yet. The community rating counts towards the score once a school has five verified reviews - until then we do not show a zero, so as not to mislead.

"Scored on disclosed data" stands where we count only what the school has written about itself on its own site: exams and destinations, safety and wellbeing, teaching staff, facilities, clubs and activities. A low score here means the school does not write about this, not that the school does not have it: a school with good security and a sparse site will score low. A school can fill in its profile, and the score will be counted again.
The score is counted from 7 of the 9 criteria.Only those with checkable data count: programmes and accreditations from official registers, the fee from a published price list. Where it says "scored on the median", the school has no data and the middle of the list is put in its place, so that a gap gives no advantage. Admissions, teaching staff and reviews come in as their data arrives. The full methodology →
