Sønderborg International School (SIS) is a small private international school in central Sønderborg for children from Danish grade 0 to age 16. It opened in 2007 as The International School of Als with twelve students, later became Sønderborg International School, and in November 2017 moved to its present building at Agervang 14. Under its articles it is a private foundation and an independently governed private school under the Danish law on private and independent schools; the board is elected by parents. The school calls itself a Cambridge International School and teaches Cambridge programmes itself: primary, Cambridge Secondary 1 with Checkpoint and Cambridge Secondary 2 with IGCSE exams; Danish for native speakers follows the national Fælles Mål with the FP9 final exam. Under the articles the teaching language is English except in language subjects. Classes are small, 12-20 students; teachers come from Spain, the USA, Great Britain, Kenya, Denmark, India, Germany, Nigeria, South Africa and the Philippines. The school describes itself as an international school for all nationalities.

About the fees The fee list carries no year. From the third child there is a discount of 185 kroner per month. Families can apply for school and after-school fee subsidies by 1 September, based on the previous year's income.
Admissions Children are admitted to Year 1 (Danish grade 0) in the year they turn 6; early entry is an exception, requiring age 5 before 1 August, a written kindergarten recommendation and a parents' meeting with the school. The school lists the academic, personal, social, motor and language skills it expects of new starters. Children who already attend school are placed by age, and after three months may move up or down one class. Children coming from abroad need a recommendation for continued schooling. Families complete a form for each child (signed by both parents with shared custody) and pay a registration fee of 600 kroner; a waiting-list place with a deferred start is possible.
Stages and year groups Grades Year 1-10 (0-9 klasse). Primary is Year 1-4, Lower Secondary Year 5-7, Upper Secondary Year 8-10; Year 1 corresponds to Danish grade 0 and Year 10 to grade 9. The curriculum is Cambridge plus the Danish Fælles Mål for Danish: Cambridge Secondary 1 (ages 11-14) ends with Checkpoint, Cambridge Secondary 2 (ages 14-16) with IGCSE exams in spring of the final year. Upper Secondary subjects: English, Maths, Science, Global Perspectives, Danish, German, History and Business Studies. Danish native speakers take the FP9 and FP10 exams in Danish. The international kindergarten, opened in 2016 with the municipality, has been run by the municipality in its Engelshøj kindergarten since September 2024.

What stands behind each entry

CambridgeCambridge International Education

Part of the University of Cambridge. It allows a school to teach the Cambridge programmes and to enter pupils for the exams. There are four stages and they are authorised separately: primary, lower secondary, IGCSE and A Level. If the stages are known they are named in the line below; if that line is missing, the school does not publish them, and the Cambridge registry does not show stages either - it gives only the name of the centre, the country and whether private candidates are accepted. Cambridge calls what it does registration rather than accreditation, and the network holds about ten thousand schools.

What the badge means for this school. The school is allowed to run this programme and to award its certificate. This is a confirmation of the programme, not a judgement on the school as a whole. The entry stands in the organisation's public register - anyone can check it. At this school: Lower Secondary (ages 11-14), IGCSE (ages 14-16). Lower Secondary is the middle stage, ages 11 to 14, with the same optional Checkpoint test at the end. IGCSE means exams at around Year 10 or 11, the British counterpart of a lower secondary leaving certificate.

"Scored on disclosed data" stands where we count only what the school has written about itself on its own site: exams and destinations, safety and wellbeing, teaching staff, facilities, clubs and activities. A low score here means the school does not write about this, not that the school does not have it: a school with good security and a sparse site will score low. A school can fill in its profile, and the score will be counted again.
The score is counted from 7 of the 9 criteria.Only those with checkable data count: programmes and accreditations from official registers, the fee from a published price list. Where it says "scored on the median", the school has no data and the middle of the list is put in its place, so that a gap gives no advantage. Admissions, teaching staff and reviews come in as their data arrives. The full methodology →
