Struer Statsgymnasium is a public upper secondary school in Struer in western Jutland that calls itself Denmark's first hybrid school: since 2008 it has offered both general upper secondary and vocational programmes, now EUD, EUX, STX, HHX, HTX, HF, IB and 10th grade under one management. The building dates from 1917 and was built for the railways, the gymnasium was founded in 1938, the boarding school opened in 1970 and IB started in 2003. The international department consists of the one-year Pre-IB and the two-year IB Diploma Programme; the school states that English is the medium of instruction and working language in Pre-IB and the IB Diploma, while Danish dominates on campus, so Pre-IB students must take Danish for beginners. The Danish programmes are taught in Danish, and their pages are in Danish only. The boarding school, with nearly 200 rooms, houses students from all of the school's programmes.

About the fees The school's website says nothing about tuition. The boarding fee for 2026-2027 is paid in ten instalments from August to May: students over 18 pay 47000 DKK a year, students under 18 from 24500 DKK at a parental income up to 120000 DKK to 47000 DKK at an income above 450000 DKK; international students document income with their own country's tax authorities, otherwise the maximum 47000 DKK applies. The fee covers board and lodging excluding holidays; staying during holidays costs 600 DKK per week or 150 DKK per day.
Admissions The school describes its admissions policy as open and inclusive. Pre-IB applicants from Danish schools apply via optagelse.dk: with a grade point average of 6 or more and a suitable declaration from the counsellor they can usually expect admission, otherwise there is an admissions test in March. Since 2023 international applicants also apply via optagelse.dk, attach a motivational letter and recent grades, and all are interviewed online; if English is not their first language, at least B2 level is required. The IB Diploma admits students after 10 or 11 years of school (MYP 5, Pre-IB, GCSE, IGCSE or equivalent) with satisfactory grades in the six chosen subjects and a background in a second language the school offers; Pre-IB students are promoted after passing end-of-year exams, with at least 7 on the Danish scale in English and a completed mini Extended Essay. EU citizens obtain an EU residence permit after arrival. The school does not accept non-EU applicants who, because of visa rules, cannot complete the full two-year IB Diploma in Denmark.
Stages and year groups International department: the one-year Pre-IB (structured like the first year of Danish STX, with transfer back to STX possible; it ends with exams that serve as entry tests to the IB Diploma) and the two-year IB Diploma Programme, classes 1i and 2i. IB subjects: Danish and English as first languages, English, Danish and German as foreign languages, Spanish and Danish ab initio, History, Psychology, Business Management, Global Politics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Sports Exercise and Health Science, two Mathematics courses and Visual Arts. The school's other programmes are Danish STX, HHX, HTX and HF with final exams, vocational EUD and EUX, and 10th grade.

What stands behind each entry

IBInternational Baccalaureate

A Swiss non-profit, working since 1968. Its programmes are among the most widely recognised school programmes in the world. Authorisation is granted stage by stage, so a school with the final stage does not necessarily run the younger ones; which stages this school holds is set out in the line below.

What the badge means for this school. The school is allowed to run this programme and to award its certificate. This is a confirmation of the programme, not a judgement on the school as a whole. The entry stands in the organisation's public register - anyone can check it. At this school: DP (ages 16-19). DP is the final stage, ages 16 to 19: six subjects plus a compulsory core of theory of knowledge, an extended essay and CAS. The diploma is accepted by universities all over the world, and in a number of countries it counts for admission on the same footing as the local leaving certificate.

National programme

The state school programme of the country the school stands in: it is set by that country's ministry of education, which also licenses the school and awards the leaving certificate. That certificate is used for entry to local universities, and abroad it is matched to the local one.

What this means for this school. This entry does not count towards the score, and that is deliberate. Every lawful school in a country works to the national programme, so on its own it tells one school apart from no other - unlike the French, German or Russian programmes, which are carried abroad and confirmed by the register of their organisation. We show it because a parent needs to know what programme their child is taught and what certificate the child will get. Counting it would lift the whole ranking at once and still tell nobody apart.

"Scored on disclosed data" stands where we count only what the school has written about itself on its own site: exams and destinations, safety and wellbeing, teaching staff, facilities, clubs and activities. A low score here means the school does not write about this, not that the school does not have it: a school with good security and a sparse site will score low. A school can fill in its profile, and the score will be counted again.
The score is counted from 7 of the 9 criteria.Only those with checkable data count: programmes and accreditations from official registers, the fee from a published price list. Where it says "scored on the median", the school has no data and the middle of the list is put in its place, so that a gap gives no advantage. Admissions, teaching staff and reviews come in as their data arrives. The full methodology →
