The 'Versmė' gymnasium in Tauragė is one of the country's oldest state schools: its roots go back to 1898, when a local prince opened a progymnasium in what was then the border town of Tauragė. The gymnasium proper was founded on September 17, 1920 in a private house on Šilalės Street; its first director was the mathematician Jonas Šarka, and it became a full four-grade institution by its third school year. In 1925 the first graduating class finished, and the school was turned into a higher commerce school, moving to Tauragė Castle. In 1940 commercial subjects were replaced with humanities, and in 1949, under the Soviet reorganization of education, it became a secondary school. Gymnasium-level classes returned experimentally in 1997; in 2000 the school moved into a renovated building at J. Tumo-Vaižganto 10, where it still works today, in 2001 it received official gymnasium status, and in 2002 its current name, 'Versmė'. Since 2013 the gymnasium has been authorized to run the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme; the first IB class, enrolled on September 1 that year, had 20 students. Teaching now runs in grades I-IV, with the final, fourth grade of the IB stream (IV TB klasei) on a compressed schedule - its second semester ends on April 24, 2026, while other classes finish later, in summer. Among the support staff named on the site are social pedagogue Irmina Ambrozevičienė, psychologist Aušra Valionienė and career specialist Danutė Bajorinienė.
