Vilnius Spindulys progymnasium traces its history to 1 September 1978, when the 47th secondary school opened in the Karoliniškės district; the institution was later reorganised and took its current name and progymnasium status. Its founder is the Vilnius City Municipality. The school now covers three stages: a pre-primary preparatory group (priešmokyklinis ugdymas), primary school (grades 1-4) and lower-secondary school (grades 5-8). By the school's own account, more than 1000 students used to enrol every year in past decades, but the site does not state a current figure. There is a library with themed exhibitions, a gym, a stadium, a canteen and a science lab for younger grades called 'Giliuko laboratorija'. After-school clubs include ceramics, robotics, mental arithmetic, karate, basketball (two groups), dance and a 'Little Medical School' - some clubs are paid, others free. Over 20 years, the school's students have won 37 gold and silver Olympiad and competition medals.

The admission commission holds several sessions during the year (from May to August), publishing lists of invited students after each one; the teaching contract must be signed within 10 calendar days of confirming a place, or the place is lost.
