Vernus International School stands in Dubai Silicon Oasis and runs an American programme built on the California Common Core standards. The school is young and growing from the bottom up: its fees are published by grade from Pre-K to grade 6, and there are no stages above that yet. Teaching is in English and the school runs a trilingual programme - English, French and Arabic; Arabic starts in the kindergarten and is built into the daily routine, and for children whose first language is not English there is a separate EAL support programme with clear entry and exit measures and small-group lessons. The teaching is project-based: instead of ready-made facts there are long investigations, MAP assessments three times a year, an innovation lab of its own and a virtual-reality room with ready-made journeys to Petra, a space station and Mars. Sport is run with the provider Activitee, there is a learner swimming pool and outdoor areas, and, more unusually, hydroponics, media and drama on the timetable.

About the fees The annual fee by grade: Pre-K, KG 1 and KG 2 - 35,704 dirhams, grades 1-3 - 38,918, grades 4-5 - 42,419, grade 6 - 45,175. The application fee is 525 dirhams including VAT and covers the assessment. New pupils pay an enrolment fee of up to 10 per cent of the annual tuition, non-refundable but credited against the first-term fee; returning pupils pay a re-enrolment fee of up to 5 per cent of tuition or 500 dirhams, whichever is higher. There are many discounts and they stack differently: up to 20 per cent for Esaad and similar privilege cards, up to 15 per cent for residents of the community, up to 50 per cent for school employees, 1,000 dirhams for a referral, up to 5 per cent for early payment, up to 5 per cent for a second and further children, and a scholarship of up to 35 per cent.
