The Vytautas the Great gymnasium in Vilnius is the country's first Lithuanian-language gymnasium, founded in 1915 by Jonas Basanavičius, Mykolas Biržiška and P. Gaidelionis; it has worked continuously for over a century. It stands in Vilnius Old Town, at Augustinų g. 8. It is now a classic Lithuanian-model gymnasium with grades I-IV (corresponding to grades 9-12); about 66 qualified teachers work there (the site does not give an exact student count). The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme runs in grades III-IV (11-12), is taught in English, and requires at least a B1 English level to enter. Since 1987 the gymnasium has taken part in long-running academic olympiads with schools from Latvia and Estonia. The school has a library named after the Biržiška family (VVDG Biržiškų biblioteka), an electronic gradebook and Moodle, and a 'Culture Passport' for organized attendance of cultural events. Student support staff include a social pedagogue, two psychologists, a special-education-needs specialist and a career specialist; there is a separate online 'box' for reporting bullying (patyciudezute.vvdg.lt), and the building has ramps and lifts for students with reduced mobility.

Admissions Admission is territorial, through Vilnius municipality's unified system (svietimas.vilnius.lt): priority goes to those living in the gymnasium's assigned catchment area, and remaining places are filled by accumulated points (family circumstances, olympiad results, grades), not by citizenship. Applications are accepted from February 1 to May 5, 2026. Lithuanian is required as the language of instruction. The International Baccalaureate programme (grades III-IV) requires English at B1 level or above, and its entrance exam is conducted in English. There is no explicit citizenship restriction or a 'Lithuanians only' competition on the site - admission is open to anyone living in Vilnius who falls within the territorial or points-based quota.
