A French school has been in Ankara for more than eighty years. It began with two instructors and by the late 1950s held about a hundred pupils near the archaeological museum; in September 1959 La Petite École was inaugurated in the gardens of the French embassy. From 1961 the secondary classes were housed in the premises of the French Institute, and the school grew in the late 1960s as French families arrived for a major dam project. The name Lycée français Charles de Gaulle settled between 1979 and 1990 after two renamings, and in 2008 the school passed into the direct administration of the French agency. It now has about a thousand pupils of nearly fifty nationalities. French is the language of instruction; English is taught at an advanced level from the elementary school to the baccalaureate and Turkish by the levels of the common European framework, and the school prepares pupils for DELE in Spanish, Cambridge certificates in English and Goethe certificates in German.
