Matija Gubec International School is the international department of a Zagreb school at Davorina Bazjanca 2, and it has been running for a long time: the school has taught the Middle Years Programme since 2002 and the Primary Years Programme since March 2018. Teaching is in English, children whose English is not yet enough have separate support lessons, and the school takes on plenty of languages: English, Croatian, German, French, Italian, and Chinese as well in the middle years. The building is new, with a spacious sports hall, athletics tracks and courts for tennis, football, volleyball and basketball; there is a canteen of its own, and the support service is a psychologist, an educational counsellor and a social pedagogue. The school day starts at eight in the morning and ends no later than 15:45, and after lessons there are more than a dozen clubs: cheerleading, climbing, a media lab, permaculture, photography, piano, food technology and a school cooperative. The main thing a parent needs to know: the school ends with grade 8, that is with MYP 3. It does not award the IB diploma, so a leaver finishes upper secondary school elsewhere; the school does not say where its eighth-graders go.

Admissions Admission runs in seven steps: an application through an online form, submission of documents, the procedure for recognition of foreign education, an interview with the principal, a placement test, the decision of the admissions committee, and registration with payment of the entrance fee. The grade is set strictly by age on 31 March of the school year the child is entering: PYP 0 takes five-year-olds, PYP 1 six-year-olds, and so on a year per grade up to PYP 4 at nine. Weak English is no obstacle to admission: for such students the school runs English support lessons until their level is enough for ordinary lessons.
Stages and year groups Grades preparatory PYP 0 - grade 8, that is MYP 3. The stages run straight through: PYP 0 - PYP 4 is the preparatory year and grades 1 to 4, MYP 0 - MYP 3 is grades 5 to 8. The school ends with grade 8: it does not award the IB Diploma, and a leaver completes upper secondary school at another school. The school day begins at 8:00 and ends no later than 15:45.
