The German International School of Zagreb takes children from kindergarten at the age of three all the way to grade 12 and sends them out with the German International Abitur, which opens universities in Germany, Austria, Croatia and other countries. Lessons are in German, Croatian is compulsory for everyone, English is added in grade 2 and French in grade 6; children whose home language is not German are given separate German as a foreign language groups free of charge, and about half of the pupils are in them. The school shares the Eurocampus with the French school of Zagreb - there are five such campuses in the world: Croatian and physical education in English, clubs and celebrations are shared by the two schools, and in the secondary school there is an exchange between them. The President of Germany has awarded the school the “Exzellente Deutsche Auslandsschule” seal after a full inspection from Germany. Its strength is science and technology: the school is recognised as a MINT-freundliche Schule, since 2018 its pupils have taken part in the “Jugend forscht” competition and they work with the Ruđer Bošković Institute in Zagreb, the University of Zagreb, the Institute of Physics and BASF, and Croatian pupils moving on to gimnazija are given scholarships by the school for their achievements. In the primary school each class has two teachers, and the whole staff is listed by name with their subjects. About the fees The fees for the 2026/27 school year are published by the school in euros and come in two rates - one for those who pay themselves, and one for those whose fees are paid by a third party. Kindergarten 5,700 and 7,410 euros a year, the preparatory class 6,500 and 8,450, primary school 8,100 and 10,530, lower and upper secondary school 8,300 and 10,790. The primary school fee includes homework supervision and language support. After-school activities cost 250 euros per offering: the Eurocampus after-school care, the workshop and active recreation in the primary school, and homework supervision in grades 5 and 6. The fee is split into five instalments between 24 August and 1 May. For late collection of a child the school charges 50 euros from the third occasion on.
Admissions Admission begins with an educational consultation, which can also be held online. The family then fills in an enrolment form - a separate one for the kindergarten with its preparatory class and a separate one for the school - plus an application to the school association, and attaches a photograph no more than three months old, the three most recent school reports, a birth certificate, proof of a registered address in Zagreb no more than three months old and a medical certificate covering all the vaccinations required by law; where the parents live apart, a custody decision is needed. Once the school management has agreed, the school issues an entrance fee of 1,500 euros per child, and the contract is signed upon its payment. German is assessed only after enrolment: at the start of the year new pupils are tested, a teacher of German as a foreign language observes them in lessons for two weeks, and on those results the child is placed in an A1-B1 level group.
Stages and year groups Grades 1-12. Kindergarten from the age of three, a one-year preparatory class for five- and six-year-olds, primary school from grade one to grade four, the lower secondary stage from grade five to grade ten and the upper stage from grade ten to grade twelve. After grade ten the school issues a secondary school certificate, and after grade twelve the German International Abitur, put together from no fewer than ten subjects. The primary school works from 8:00 to 14:00, on Fridays until 13:00, with supervision extended to 17:00; the secondary stage has lessons until 14:45 or 15:30 on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays and until 13:10 on Wednesdays and Fridays.

A German federal agency. It recognises a school as a German school abroad, funds it and grants the right to award the German leaving certificate. Quality is examined by a state inspection about once every six years, and schools that pass receive the mark of an excellent German school abroad.

The school publishes a separate document, “Schutzkonzept” - its child protection concept - and beside it the school rules, the disciplinary measures, the rules on the use of telephones, the procedure for absences and the statute of the school's student council. Entry to the building is restricted: only the parents of kindergarten and preparatory class children are let inside, primary school and Gymnasium pupils come in on their own, visitors are registered in advance through the secretariat, and once a child has been collected parents are asked to leave the campus within fifteen minutes. Cameras watch over the whole Eurocampus. There are two school social pedagogues on the staff. Medical check-ups before grade one and in grades five to seven follow the school health programme - an examination, the compulsory vaccinations, health talks and epidemiological monitoring.
