Accredited European School Tyrol (Anerkannte Europäische Schule Tirol, AES Tirol) is the first state school in Austria within the European Schools system: students follow the common European curricula towards the European Baccalaureate (Europäisches Abitur), which in Austria is equivalent to the Matura. It is not one building but a group of state schools in Innsbruck: primary years 1-4 at Volksschule Saggen (English and German sections, formerly Innsbruck Elementary School, an English primary school since 2007) and at Volksschule Altwilten (Italian section); from year 5 to graduation at Akademisches Gymnasium Innsbruck, the same grammar school that runs International School Innsbruck with the IB DP. From autumn 2027 the municipal kindergarten Daniel Sailer joins AES. The language of instruction is chosen on admission: English, Italian or German; the secondary level currently runs in the German and English sections. It is an all-day school with a shared lunch. For autumn 2026 the school expects more than 800 students. Status: the school's own page calls AES Tirol a candidate ("führt aktuell den Status einer Bewerberin"), while an AGI news item calls it officially recognised.

More than 800 students, the number the school expects for autumn 2026 across all sites; at the start in autumn 2023 there were 50 students.
Admissions The school is open both to children of international professionals working in Tyrol and to Tyrolean families: "Unsere Schulgemeinschaft bietet einerseits ein Bildungsangebot für Kinder und Jugendliche von internationalen in Tirol tätigen Fachkräften. Andererseits steht unsere Schule auch für Kinder und Jugendliche von Tiroler Familien offen"; the Saggen site "nimmt Schüler aller Nationalitäten und Glaubensrichtungen auf" (admits students of all nationalities and faiths). Year 1 takes children who turn 6 by 1 September; admission is through an orientation talk with the child (linguistic flexibility, motivation, social maturity) and a talk between the head and the parents, where the language section is chosen; the head decides. Year 1 registration is in winter; because of high demand late applications are not accepted, except families arriving from abroad: "ausgenommen internationale Quereinsteiger aus dem Ausland"; families moving to Tyrol can apply throughout the year. Secondary level: application through the common Innsbruck grammar school form with AES (code AGI-AES) ranked first, with the year 3 and year 4 primary reports and the child's registration certificate (Meldezettel). The catchment area is the whole of Tyrol.
Stages and year groups Grades P1-P5, S1-S7. European Schools system: the primary level (Primarstufe) lasts 5 years, P1-P4 at Saggen and Altwilten, P5 already at Akademisches Gymnasium Innsbruck; the secondary level (Sekundarstufe) lasts 7 years, S1-S7 (Austrian levels 6-12) at AGI. S6-S7 lead to the European Baccalaureate (Europäisches Abitur): "Das Abiturzeugnis ist gleichwertig mit der österreichischen Reifeprüfung" (the certificate is equivalent to the Austrian Matura). AES has no IB programme: the IB Diploma Programme in the same building belongs to another stream of the grammar school, International School Innsbruck. From September 2027 a kindergarten (N1-N2), Daniel Sailer, with German, English and Italian sections is added.

What stands behind each entry

European SchoolsThe European Union's European Schools (Schola Europaea)

An intergovernmental system of European Union schools with its own curriculum and its own certificate, the European Baccalaureate. It runs thirteen schools of its own, and national schools gain the status of Accredited European School after an audit with a visit by inspectors. The certificate is recognised for university entry in every EU country.

What the badge means for this school. The school runs the European Schools curriculum, and this can be checked in the system's lists at eursc.eu. The system's own schools are checked by inspectors from EU countries, accredited schools pass an in-school audit, and accreditation is renewed every three years. Whether the school awards the European Baccalaureate, and whom it admits, is stated on its own page. The entry stands in the organisation's public register - anyone can check it.

European Schools programme (European Baccalaureate)

The European Union's European Schools curriculum from nursery to the final year, with the European Baccalaureate as the leaving certificate. Teaching is in language sections, and a second language is compulsory from primary school.

What this means for this school. The curriculum and the certificate are set by the European Schools system, whose Board of Governors is made up of the education ministers of the EU countries. European Baccalaureate papers are marked by the teacher and an external examiner, and the certificate is recognised for university entry in every EU country and in several others. A school may award it only if it is one of the system's own schools or is accredited for the senior years.

Exams and destinations from the school's official website

No reviews yet. The community rating counts towards the score once a school has five verified reviews - until then we do not show a zero, so as not to mislead.

"Scored on disclosed data" stands where we count only what the school has written about itself on its own site: exams and destinations, safety and wellbeing, teaching staff, facilities, clubs and activities. A low score here means the school does not write about this, not that the school does not have it: a school with good security and a sparse site will score low. A school can fill in its profile, and the score will be counted again.
The score is counted from 7 of the 9 criteria.Only those with checkable data count: programmes and accreditations from official registers, the fee from a published price list. Where it says "scored on the median", the school has no data and the middle of the list is put in its place, so that a gap gives no advantage. Admissions, teaching staff and reviews come in as their data arrives. The full methodology →
