Colegio Internacional Torrequebrada opened in 2004 in Benalmadena near Malaga and has, by its own account, become a benchmark of international education on the Costa del Sol. The school belongs to the Affinitas group - and a group in itself gives a school no external recognition. Its International Baccalaureate continuum is complete, and it separates it stage by stage right in the site menu: kindergarten and primary follow the Primary Years Programme, secondary the Middle Years Programme and the bachillerato the Diploma Programme. The school is recognised both by the Spanish Ministry of Education and as a British school in Spain. The promise it formulates itself: a leaver should be able to think critically and communicate persuasively in at least three languages, and be a free, courageous and educated citizen with judgement of their own. The support service is named in a single line - guidance, psychopedagogy and first aid; the school also has a "culture of care" section. Among its services the school names its own restaurants, school transport, uniforms, extracurricular activities and summer camps, giving each service its own section of the site.

Admissions The school takes foreigners: on its home page it says that its school community has more than 30 nationalities, and it calls itself a welcoming international environment. Admission goes in four steps: the family fills in a form and the school gets in touch to answer questions and arrange a visit; a meeting with the admissions office at the school, a talk about the educational project and a tour of the campus; the school says whether a place is available and names the next steps; an interview with the child about their interests, expectations and academic plans. The school names no deadlines, entrance exam or language requirement.
Stages and year groups Grades kindergarten from age 3 - the bachillerato, up to age 18. The stages are separated by IB programme right in the school's menu: Infant - Primary Years Programme, Primary - Primary Years Programme, Secondary - Middle Years Programme, Baccalaureate - Diploma Programme. The school speaks of the fifteen years of schooling a child spends with it, that is a full cycle from three to eighteen.

What stands behind each entry

IBInternational Baccalaureate

A Swiss non-profit, working since 1968. Its programmes are among the most widely recognised school programmes in the world. Authorisation is granted stage by stage, so a school with the final stage does not necessarily run the younger ones; which stages this school holds is set out in the line below.

What the badge means for this school. The school is allowed to run this programme and to award its certificate. This is a confirmation of the programme, not a judgement on the school as a whole. The entry stands in the organisation's public register - anyone can check it. At this school: PYP (ages 3-12), MYP (ages 11-16), DP (ages 16-19). PYP is the primary stage, ages 3 to 12. It is not a set of subjects but a frame for the whole school: learning is built around lines of inquiry, and there are no exams at the end. MYP is the middle stage, ages 11 to 16. There are no exams here either; at the end an optional electronic assessment of pupils' work is possible. DP is the final stage, ages 16 to 19: six subjects plus a compulsory core of theory of knowledge, an extended essay and CAS. The diploma is accepted by universities all over the world, and in a number of countries it counts for admission on the same footing as the local leaving certificate.

Affinitas Educationschool network

Affinitas Education is an international group of private schools; its site gives neither a founding year nor an owner. The group gives different school counts on its own pages - "30 international schools" in the text, "30+" in a counter and 25 schools in the catalogue on the same page - and we quote all three: choosing for a group which of its own numbers is correct is not something we do. On the same page the group cites more than 20,000 students, 7 countries and 3 continents; its catalogue includes schools in Spain, Portugal, Italy, the United States, Mexico and Brazil. In Spain there are six schools: in Seville, Madrid, Málaga, Xàbia (Alicante province) and two in the province of Valencia. The group's site is affinitasedu.com.

What this means for this school. The network owns or operates the school. Its accreditation and programme authorisation the school obtains separately, in its own name.

Reviews

No reviews yet. The community rating counts towards the score once a school has five verified reviews - until then we do not show a zero, so as not to mislead.

"Scored on disclosed data" stands where we count only what the school has written about itself on its own site: exams and destinations, safety and wellbeing, teaching staff, facilities, clubs and activities. A low score here means the school does not write about this, not that the school does not have it: a school with good security and a sparse site will score low. A school can fill in its profile, and the score will be counted again.
The score is counted from 7 of the 9 criteria.Only those with checkable data count: programmes and accreditations from official registers, the fee from a published price list. Where it says "scored on the median", the school has no data and the middle of the list is put in its place, so that a gap gives no advantage. Admissions, teaching staff and reviews come in as their data arrives. The full methodology →
