IES Rosa Chacel is a state secondary school in Colmenar Viejo, outside Madrid, and it calls itself an "institute of innovation and enterprise". What sets it apart from almost every state school in Spain is that it runs two IB programmes, and neither as a separate stream: it embeds the Middle Years Programme in the national curriculum, and runs the Diploma alongside the ordinary bachillerato, so a leaver comes out with a double qualification. The school names the dates itself: the Diploma was authorised in 2010, and in 2021 the Community of Madrid backed the introduction of the Middle Years Programme, with the school writing that it became the first state school in Spain to take on its implementation for all of its pupils rather than for a selected group. It names four central projects as its distinguishing marks: the MYP, the Diploma Programme, a physical activity and sport promoting institute, and a technological innovation institute. Its awards come in a long line: the 2019 national prize for good educational practice for the TIC-TAC project, the 2016 SIMO prize for the best ICT integration project, appointment as a technological innovation institute in 2009 - a programme covering fifteen centres in the Community of Madrid with technology-equipped classrooms - the education ministry's first Marta Mata quality prize in the same year 2009, and the ministry's third prize in 2007 for the project "the school server as a driver of participation". The school has kept a digital staff agenda since 2005.

Admissions The school runs admission to each of its two IB programmes on a page of its own. For the Middle Years Programme there is an admission process, a form to book a preliminary appointment, a frequently asked questions guide and the official publication "the MYP in brief". For the Diploma Programme there is an admission process, an application form, a frequently asked questions guide, an information brochure and a "Jornada investigación". For both programmes the school publishes presentation standards for academic work and assessment criteria with subject working rules. It names no mark thresholds or deadlines on these pages. Only the school's current pupils and those who have obtained a place through the general admission procedure can enrol: the school office sends them access to an online enrolment platform, where two enrolments are filled in - one for promotion to the next year and one for repeating it - and the printed and signed form is handed in at the office with the documents. The school writes nothing separately about children arriving from other countries.
Stages and year groups Grades ESO with the Middle Years Programme and Bachillerato with the Diploma Programme. The IB Middle Years Programme is intended for ages 11 to 16, and the school embeds it in the national curriculum rather than running it as a separate stream. The Diploma Programme runs alongside the national bachillerato, and a leaver receives a double qualification - the Spanish bachillerato and the IB diploma. The school publishes its educational offer as a separate PDF for each school year.

What stands behind each entry

IBInternational Baccalaureate

A Swiss non-profit, working since 1968. Its programmes are among the most widely recognised school programmes in the world. Authorisation is granted stage by stage, so a school with the final stage does not necessarily run the younger ones; which stages this school holds is set out in the line below.

What the badge means for this school. The school is allowed to run this programme and to award its certificate. This is a confirmation of the programme, not a judgement on the school as a whole. The entry stands in the organisation's public register - anyone can check it. At this school: MYP (ages 11-16), DP (ages 16-19). MYP is the middle stage, ages 11 to 16. There are no exams here either; at the end an optional electronic assessment of pupils' work is possible. DP is the final stage, ages 16 to 19: six subjects plus a compulsory core of theory of knowledge, an extended essay and CAS. The diploma is accepted by universities all over the world, and in a number of countries it counts for admission on the same footing as the local leaving certificate.

National programme

The state school programme of the country the school stands in: it is set by that country's ministry of education, which also licenses the school and awards the leaving certificate. That certificate is used for entry to local universities, and abroad it is matched to the local one.

What this means for this school. This entry does not count towards the score, and that is deliberate. Every lawful school in a country works to the national programme, so on its own it tells one school apart from no other - unlike the French, German or Russian programmes, which are carried abroad and confirmed by the register of their organisation. We show it because a parent needs to know what programme their child is taught and what certificate the child will get. Counting it would lift the whole ranking at once and still tell nobody apart.

Exams and destinations from the school's official website

The school publishes nothing about where its leavers go: no share going on to university, no exam results, no list of universities.

Facilities

The school does not describe its premises on its website.

Teaching staff

The school publishes neither the number of its teachers nor their qualifications.

Safety and wellbeing from the school's official website

The school says nothing on its website about security, medical care or pupil support.

Reviews

No reviews yet. The community rating counts towards the score once a school has five verified reviews - until then we do not show a zero, so as not to mislead.

"Scored on disclosed data" stands where we count only what the school has written about itself on its own site: exams and destinations, safety and wellbeing, teaching staff, facilities, clubs and activities. A low score here means the school does not write about this, not that the school does not have it: a school with good security and a sparse site will score low. A school can fill in its profile, and the score will be counted again.
The score is counted from 7 of the 9 criteria.Only those with checkable data count: programmes and accreditations from official registers, the fee from a published price list. Where it says "scored on the median", the school has no data and the middle of the list is put in its place, so that a gap gives no advantage. Admissions, teaching staff and reviews come in as their data arrives. The full methodology →
