Colégio Planalto started work on 9 October 1978 in Lisbon, at Rua Armindo Rodrigues 28, and from the start describes itself as a college that helps parents in the education of their children, with a Christian view of education, a personalised approach and attention to human formation. The stages run from nursery and kindergarten, where the Optimist programme works, through the first, second and third cycles of the Portuguese school to secondary, where pupils take the International Baccalaureate Diploma: the college was recognised to teach the IB in 1992, its leavers received their first diplomas in 1996, and of its secondary stage the college speaks of twenty-four years of successes and excellent grades. The college calls the Diploma bilingual in character, while every page for parents and pupils, the regulation, the guide and the list of extracurricular activities are written in Portuguese and the stages are the Portuguese national ones; hence the conclusion that lessons run mainly in Portuguese, with an English part in the senior stage. English is taught separately, with English teachers and the Tanglish club. The school day runs from 8:30 to 16:10. There is a canteen with the outside caterer Gertal, the Salão Nobre hall, transport to Praça de Itália in Restelo, extended hours until 19:00 and a psycho-pedagogical support office. Extracurricular activities are many: guitar, violin and cello, cookery and drawing and painting studios, a reading and writing club, an English club, football, rugby, judo, fencing, The Inventors robotics and Aloha mental arithmetic. Of its leavers' destinations the college speaks only in general terms - the best universities in Portugal and abroad - and names none.
