Deutsche Schule Barcelona is a private German school abroad in Esplugues de Llobregat, in the "Ciudad Diagonal" on the western edge of the Barcelona conurbation, two minutes from a metro station. It takes children from two into its Parvulario and runs through to the German International Abitur at the end of grade 12; a pupil can also leave earlier - with the German school leaving certificate after grade 9 or with the Spanish ESO after grade 10. From the first year of primary school almost all subjects are taught in German and follow the official curriculum of the German Standing Conference of Ministers of Education for the Iberian Peninsula. Beyond German and Spanish the school teaches English, Catalan and, optionally, French. Each year about 120 of its pupils gain the Deutsches Internationales Abitur, which in Spain is recognised as equal to the bachillerato. For Spanish and Catalan speakers the school offers a separate entry route: a preparatory year of German and admission into grade 5. The school is run by a private association: the families elect the board, which runs the school together with the school leadership; the money comes from the families' fees and from subsidies from the Federal Republic of Germany.

About the fees The 2026/2027 fee is annual but paid in ten instalments from September to June (nine for grade 12, September to May): Infantil, 8:00 to 13:00-14:00, is 660 EUR a month or 6600 EUR a year; grades 1 to 11 are 657 EUR a month or 6570 EUR a year; grade 12, the Abitur year, is 731 EUR a month or 6579 EUR a year. There is a separate IT charge: 10 EUR a month (100 a year) from grades 3-4, 14 (140) for grades 5-6, 20 (200) for grades 7-11 and 22 EUR a month (198 a year) for grade 12. Extra services for Infantil: early drop-off from 7:30 to 8:00 at 26 EUR a month (free for pupils who come by bus), an extension until 15:00 at 60 EUR a month, and five afternoons in fixed groups from 13:45 to 16:30 at 253 EUR a month. Meals are not included in the price. On top of the fee, once a new pupil's admission is confirmed the family pays at least 2500 EUR into the school's private foundation for the Kindergarten (I2-I4) and at least 3000 EUR for Infantil 5, primary and secondary; the foundation issues a certificate of the donation. Payments are taken monthly by direct debit.
Admissions The school takes foreigners and says so directly: pupils coming from the German school system can join the secondary school up to the start of class 11, and children without Spanish study it for two years in small groups before joining the regular classes; all pupils, German and of other nationalities alike, must study Catalan for their certificate to be recognised in Spain. Without German a child can start in kindergarten at 2-3 years of age or take a preparatory course; primary takes pupils up to class 4, and Spanish- and Catalan-speaking children enter class 5 through the encounter classes (Clases de Encuentro). Pupils from the German system have an interview, those who know Spanish a language check. Applications are due by 1 July of the year of entry, with separate forms for kindergarten and for primary and secondary.
Stages and year groups Grades Parvulario from age 2 - grade 12, Deutsches Internationales Abitur. The stages run right through: Parvulario from age two, the Grundschule primary school, the Oberstufe secondary school and grade 12 with the German International Abitur. The school names the intermediate exits outright: the German school leaving certificate after grade 9 or the Spanish ESO after grade 10. Afternoon activities run from 14:00 to 16:30 in primary and from 15:00 to 16:30 in secondary.

ZfACentral Agency for German Schools Abroad
A German federal agency. It recognises a school as a German school abroad, funds it and grants the right to award the German leaving certificate. Quality is examined by a state inspection about once every six years, and schools that pass receive the mark of an excellent German school abroad.
What the badge means for this school. The school has been through this organisation's accreditation. It was judged as a whole: governance, safeguarding, staff, premises, teaching. The entry stands in the organisation's public register - anyone can check it.

The German school programme. Recognised German schools abroad award the Deutsches Internationales Abitur, the German leaving certificate used for entry to universities in Germany. Behind the recognition stands the federal agency ZfA.
What this means for this school. ZfA recognition comes at levels: a school that takes pupils through to the German leaving certificate is one thing, a school with the DSD language diploma, where German is taught as a subject, is another. Which level this school holds is not stated here.
Exams and destinations from the school's official website
The school publishes nothing about where its leavers go: no share going on to university, no exam results, no list of universities.

Campus: The campus in the "Ciudad Diagonal" in Esplugues de Llobregat, on the hillside beyond the end of Barcelona's Diagonal, includes a separate Parvulario building. The school has a library and a music school of its own. It does not run transport itself: the municipal "Just-Metro" bus runs from the Zona Universitaria metro station with a stop in front of the school, and private coach companies serve Barcelona and the towns around it - Castelldefels, Gavà, Sitges, Sabadell, Cerdanyola, Rubí, Sant Cugat, Premià de Mar, Masnou and Montgat - under contracts with families.

No reviews yet. The community rating counts towards the score once a school has five verified reviews - until then we do not show a zero, so as not to mislead.

A low score here means the school does not write about this, not that the school does not have it: a school with good security and a sparse site will score low. A school can fill in its profile, and the score will be counted again.
The score is counted from 8 of the 9 criteria.Only those with checkable data count: programmes and accreditations from official registers, the fee from a published price list. Where it says "scored on the median", the school has no data and the middle of the list is put in its place, so that a gap gives no advantage. Admissions, teaching staff and reviews come in as their data arrives.
