IES Histórico Bachiller Sabuco is a state institute in the centre of Albacete and one of the oldest in Spain: it was opened provisionally in the 1840-1841 school year at the request of local families, first in the former convent of San Agustín, then for almost a century in the convent of San Francisco, and since 1932 in its own building on the Avenida de España. Among the institute's pupils was Ramón Menéndez Pidal, who sat his entrance examination here in 1879; the school holds the status of a historic institute of Castilla-La Mancha, its own museum with cabinets of history, physics and chemistry, agriculture, drawing and natural sciences, and an archive with minutes and reports from the 19th and 20th centuries. It teaches ESO and the bachillerato, and besides the day school it runs a distance bachillerato and an evening bachillerato for adults. Lessons are in Spanish, and in two language programmes some subjects are taught in English or in German and English. The institute has run the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme since the 2001-2002 school year alongside the Spanish bachillerato, in three tracks: technology, sciences and social sciences; according to the local press the school links to, more than a thousand pupils have taken the programme here. Education is free, the IB programme included: its fees are paid by the regional education ministry. The school has a school mediation programme, Erasmus+ and eTwinning projects and exchanges with the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Finland and Norway.

About the fees The institute is a state school, and pupils, the school says, do not pay a cent for any programme, the International Baccalaureate included. The IB registration and membership fees, which the school calls considerable, are paid by the regional education ministry, and the continuous training of the programme's teachers is co-funded by the Globalcaja foundation.
Admissions The institute is a state school, and entry to the first year of ESO follows the general procedure of Castilla-La Mancha for state schools; the English and German-English language programmes have a separate intake, and the school publishes lists of provisionally admitted pupils. For the IB Diploma Programme, the school says, any pupil from the province of Albacete, and from other provinces and autonomous communities, from any school and on equal terms, may apply: the only criterion is academic performance, the marks from the first to the third year of ESO are taken into account, and there are no more than 25 places across all tracks. The procedure: an information meeting for families in February, from the end of February to mid-April an application to the secretariat together with a certificate of marks (for pupils from other schools), in April a provisional list and a week for objections, at the beginning of June the final list, withdrawal from a place until 10 June, and enrolment in the first half of July. Separately the pupil also goes through the ordinary admission procedure for the bachillerato. The school writes nothing about children from abroad, their documents or knowledge of Spanish.
Stages and year groups Grades 1st year of ESO - 2nd year of the bachillerato. The institute runs four years of ESO and two years of the bachillerato. The IB Diploma Programme runs in the bachillerato together with the Spanish LOMLOE bachillerato, in three tracks - technology, sciences and social sciences - and its pupils have a longer school week than the others. Besides the day school the institute has a distance bachillerato and an evening bachillerato for adults. ESO lessons run from 8:15 to 14:15. In the IB, the school says, groups are small; there are no more than 25 places in the programme.

IBInternational Baccalaureate
A Swiss non-profit, working since 1968. Its programmes are among the most widely recognised school programmes in the world. Authorisation is granted stage by stage, so a school with the final stage does not necessarily run the younger ones; which stages this school holds is set out in the line below.
What the badge means for this school. The school is allowed to run this programme and to award its certificate. This is a confirmation of the programme, not a judgement on the school as a whole. The entry stands in the organisation's public register - anyone can check it. At this school: DP (ages 16-19). DP is the final stage, ages 16 to 19: six subjects plus a compulsory core of theory of knowledge, an extended essay and CAS. The diploma is accepted by universities all over the world, and in a number of countries it counts for admission on the same footing as the local leaving certificate.

A low score here means the school does not write about this, not that the school does not have it: a school with good security and a sparse site will score low. A school can fill in its profile, and the score will be counted again.
The score is counted from 8 of the 9 criteria.Only those with checkable data count: programmes and accreditations from official registers, the fee from a published price list. Where it says "scored on the median", the school has no data and the middle of the list is put in its place, so that a gap gives no advantage. Admissions, teaching staff and reviews come in as their data arrives.
