IES Lucas Mallada is a state institute on Torre Mendoza street in Huesca. It runs ESO and the bachillerato, and beyond them a distance bachillerato for adults. Since 2002 it has run the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, and the school calls itself the only state centre in Aragon where it can be taken free of charge with a double qualification for university entry; the IB subjects are arranged in four tracks - technology, sciences, social sciences and humanities. Since the 2019-2020 school year the institute has worked on the BRIT-Aragón bilingual model with French: in all four years of ESO French is taught for four hours a week, and one more subject in each year is taught in French - biology, social studies or physical education; in the fourth year pupils sit a free B1 examination and can take DELF Scolaire. There are exchanges with France, the six-week Cruzando Fronteras immersion programme with the Académie de Toulouse and an exchange with a gymnasium in Leipzig in the first year of the bachillerato. The school runs the Clan-Destino reading club for pupils, parents and teachers, the BiblioJoven club, a debating tournament together with an institute from Cabra and the PROA+ programme with co-teaching in the first year of ESO. Education is free, as at any state institute.

About the fees The institute is a state school, and education there is free; of the IB Diploma Programme the school writes separately that it is the only state centre in Aragon where it is offered free of charge. Only trips and events are paid for, through the school's payment page.
Admissions Admission to ESO and the ordinary bachillerato follows the general procedure of Aragon for state institutes; the school posts forms and deadlines in its secretariat section and runs a separate intake for the distance bachillerato for adults. For the IB Diploma Programme the school has its own three-part selection. First, academic record: in the fourth year of ESO or an equivalent stage of another education system the average mark must be at least 8 in four core subjects - Spanish language and literature, geography and history, mathematics B and English - and two optional subjects. Then a letter of motivation and an interview with the programme coordinator and at least one of its teachers, assessing international-mindedness, motivation, work habits and personal goals. The final score is made up half of marks, 40 per cent of the interview and 10 per cent of the letter, and a place requires at least 7 out of 10. Before admission the school holds an open day in its assembly hall. The school writes nothing specifically about children from abroad.
Stages and year groups Grades 1st year of ESO - 2nd year of the bachillerato, plus a distance bachillerato. The institute runs four years of ESO, including the PAI and DIVER programmes and a bilingual branch in the fourth year, and two years of the bachillerato; the IB Diploma Programme runs in the bachillerato alongside the Spanish LOMLOE curriculum, in four tracks: technology, sciences, social sciences and humanities. Besides the day school there is a distance bachillerato for adults with its own intake. The IB programme has six subjects, three at higher level and three at standard level, plus theory of knowledge, the extended essay and CAS.

The school names its IB stage itself, not in the text of the page but in a Genially presentation embedded in it, "Bachillerato Internacional": the Diploma Programme has run at the institute since 2002, with four subject tracks, an admission procedure and a programme contact. There is still no ordinary text on the /bachillerato-internacional/ page.

What stands behind each entry

IBInternational Baccalaureate

A Swiss non-profit, working since 1968. Its programmes are among the most widely recognised school programmes in the world. Authorisation is granted stage by stage, so a school with the final stage does not necessarily run the younger ones; which stages this school holds is set out in the line below.

What the badge means for this school. The school is allowed to run this programme and to award its certificate. This is a confirmation of the programme, not a judgement on the school as a whole. The entry stands in the organisation's public register - anyone can check it. At this school: DP (ages 16-19). DP is the final stage, ages 16 to 19: six subjects plus a compulsory core of theory of knowledge, an extended essay and CAS. The diploma is accepted by universities all over the world, and in a number of countries it counts for admission on the same footing as the local leaving certificate.

National programme

The state school programme of the country the school stands in: it is set by that country's ministry of education, which also licenses the school and awards the leaving certificate. That certificate is used for entry to local universities, and abroad it is matched to the local one.

What this means for this school. This entry does not count towards the score, and that is deliberate. Every lawful school in a country works to the national programme, so on its own it tells one school apart from no other - unlike the French, German or Russian programmes, which are carried abroad and confirmed by the register of their organisation. We show it because a parent needs to know what programme their child is taught and what certificate the child will get. Counting it would lift the whole ranking at once and still tell nobody apart.

The school publishes nothing about where its leavers go: no share going on to university, no exam results, no list of universities.

"Scored on disclosed data" stands where we count only what the school has written about itself on its own site: exams and destinations, safety and wellbeing, teaching staff, facilities, clubs and activities. A low score here means the school does not write about this, not that the school does not have it: a school with good security and a sparse site will score low. A school can fill in its profile, and the score will be counted again.
The score is counted from 8 of the 9 criteria.Only those with checkable data count: programmes and accreditations from official registers, the fee from a published price list. Where it says "scored on the median", the school has no data and the middle of the list is put in its place, so that a gap gives no advantage. Admissions, teaching staff and reviews come in as their data arrives. The full methodology →
