Svenska Skolan Gran Canaria (Colegio Sueco) is a Swedish school abroad in San Agustín in the south of Gran Canaria, operating since 1965. It is approved by the Swedish state and inspected by Skolinspektionen, there is a Skolverket representative on its board, and on returning to Sweden a pupil goes straight into the Swedish school system. All lessons are in Swedish except Spanish and English, which start at age 3. Preschool for ages 3-5, förskoleklass and grades 1-6 are taught on site under the Swedish curriculum in small mixed-age groups (F-1, 2-3 and 4-6), with an individual development plan and written reports each term for every pupil. Pupils in grades 7-9 follow the Swedish distance programme of Sofia Distans and upper secondary pupils Hermods, while at school they work with a tutor and study in a class with peers. Pupils include children of families living on the island and children who come for a few days, weeks or months. With the Swedish Tennis Academy the school offers a way to combine schooling with tennis.

Admissions The school admits children from age 3 who are out of nappies, for periods from a few days to several years. In förskoleklass to grade 6 the child must hold a citizenship other than only Spanish (that is, another or dual citizenship), and guardians sign the school start letter. The school cannot admit children who need special support: it has no special needs teachers or assistants. Steps: an email with the guardian's and child's names, grade and period; the school replies on availability and invoices the registration fee and deposit, and once paid the place is guaranteed. Short-term registration opens on 1 May for the autumn and 1 September for the spring. For grades 7-9 and upper secondary families register both with the distance school (Sofia Distans or Hermods) and with the school for tutoring.

What stands behind each entry

SkolverketSwedish National Agency for Education (Skolverket)

A Swedish school abroad: the full-day Swedish curriculum, a state grant from Skolverket and checks by the Swedish Schools Inspectorate.

What the badge means for this school. This is a Swedish school abroad: it teaches the full-day Swedish curriculum, and Skolverket gives it a state grant - this can be seen in its grant decisions. The entry is not a quality inspection. The curriculum and the qualifications are Swedish. Whom the school admits and what it charges are on its own website. The entry stands in the organisation's public register - anyone can check it.

Swedish programme

The Swedish school curriculum taught in Swedish: förskoleklass, the compulsory grundskola under the Lgr22 curriculum and, at some schools, the upper-secondary gymnasieskola leading to the Swedish gymnasieexamen.

What this means for this school. The curriculum is set by the Swedish state: the school follows the Swedish curriculum, receives state funding through Skolverket and is checked by the Swedish Schools Inspectorate. A child who returns to Sweden carries on without switching from another system.

"Scored on disclosed data" stands where we count only what the school has written about itself on its own site: exams and destinations, safety and wellbeing, teaching staff, facilities, clubs and activities. A low score here means the school does not write about this, not that the school does not have it: a school with good security and a sparse site will score low. A school can fill in its profile, and the score will be counted again.
The score is counted from 8 of the 9 criteria.Only those with checkable data count: programmes and accreditations from official registers, the fee from a published price list. Where it says "scored on the median", the school has no data and the middle of the list is put in its place, so that a gap gives no advantage. Admissions, teaching staff and reviews come in as their data arrives. The full methodology →
