Colegio Madrid - Fundación Santa María is a private secular co-educational school in Madrid, from age zero to eighteen, working on three sites: the nursery at Sotillo 1, infant, primary and secondary school at Ronda de Sobradiel 80 in Chamartín, and the bachillerato at Mesena 101 in Ciudad Lineal. The school arose from the merger of Colegio Madrid and Fundación Santa María. The key thing for parents: the school teaches the IB diploma in Spanish and says so in so many words ("Nuestro Bachillerato Internacional NO se imparte en inglés"); Spanish is the mother tongue of about 98 per cent of pupils. The school has offered the diploma since the 2020-21 school year; after the fourth year of ESO a pupil chooses between the national bachillerato in three versions and the international one with four tracks; the IB diploma gives access to Spanish universities without the EVAU exam. Everyone studies English from nursery to the end of school, in the nursery native-speaker teachers work alongside the teachers all day, and on Fridays the day is led by teachers from the Instituto Internacional de Boston; from the first year of ESO French or German is added. Debate, public speaking and theatre are compulsory subjects in every year, and primary and secondary pupils have an hour of sport every day; the school's debate team became Spanish champion in 2025 in the CICAE-URJC league. There are about thirty clubs, from basketball and karate to ceramics, robotics, violin and choir, and in summer the school organises camps.

Admissions Registration for the 2027-2028 school year is already open; admission begins with an interview and a visit, which can be booked by telephone or through the contacts page; open days are announced separately. In its IB diploma admissions policy the school writes that, like the IB organisation itself, it does not exclude students on grounds of nationality, origin, culture, sex, orientation, religion or disability; in its language policy, that it supports the different mother tongues of its pupils. The IB diploma takes both its own and outside students: a motivation letter, secondary school reports and English at B2 or an equivalent level judged by the English department are required; students from other schools also sit tests in mathematics and Spanish and have interviews in English and about the programme. The decision is made by a committee of the school leadership, the English department, guidance and the coordinator; a provisional list is published in May, and enrolment takes place in the first ten working days of June.
Stages and year groups Grades nursery from 6 months - 2nd year of bachillerato (to age 18). The stages are spread over three addresses: the nursery for children from six months to three years at Sotillo 1, infant, primary and secondary school at Ronda de Sobradiel 80, and the bachillerato at Mesena 101. The bachillerato has three national versions - science and technology, humanities and social sciences, visual and performing arts - and the IB diploma in Spanish with four tracks: two science tracks, a social sciences track and an arts track. The school day starts at 9:30; those who arrive earlier stay with a teacher from 8:45, and in the evening there is supervision until 17:00. Primary and secondary pupils have an hour of physical education every day.

What stands behind each entry

IBInternational Baccalaureate

A Swiss non-profit, working since 1968. Its programmes are among the most widely recognised school programmes in the world. Authorisation is granted stage by stage, so a school with the final stage does not necessarily run the younger ones; which stages this school holds is set out in the line below.

What the badge means for this school. The school is allowed to run this programme and to award its certificate. This is a confirmation of the programme, not a judgement on the school as a whole. The entry stands in the organisation's public register - anyone can check it. At this school: DP (ages 16-19). DP is the final stage, ages 16 to 19: six subjects plus a compulsory core of theory of knowledge, an extended essay and CAS. The diploma is accepted by universities all over the world, and in a number of countries it counts for admission on the same footing as the local leaving certificate.

National programme

The state school programme of the country the school stands in: it is set by that country's ministry of education, which also licenses the school and awards the leaving certificate. That certificate is used for entry to local universities, and abroad it is matched to the local one.

What this means for this school. This entry does not count towards the score, and that is deliberate. Every lawful school in a country works to the national programme, so on its own it tells one school apart from no other - unlike the French, German or Russian programmes, which are carried abroad and confirmed by the register of their organisation. We show it because a parent needs to know what programme their child is taught and what certificate the child will get. Counting it would lift the whole ranking at once and still tell nobody apart.

The school publishes nothing about where its leavers go: no share going on to university, no exam results, no list of universities.

Mesena 101 is the bachillerato building with classrooms, laboratories, a library, an outdoor area and a covered gym. Each site has its own urban vegetable garden, a vertical one in the bachillerato. "Scored on disclosed data" stands where we count only what the school has written about itself on its own site: exams and destinations, safety and wellbeing, teaching staff, facilities, clubs and activities. A low score here means the school does not write about this, not that the school does not have it: a school with good security and a sparse site will score low. A school can fill in its profile, and the score will be counted again.
The score is counted from 7 of the 9 criteria.Only those with checkable data count: programmes and accreditations from official registers, the fee from a published price list. Where it says "scored on the median", the school has no data and the middle of the list is put in its place, so that a gap gives no advantage. Admissions, teaching staff and reviews come in as their data arrives. The full methodology →
