Den Norske Skolen Málaga is a Norwegian private school for grades 1 to 10 on the Costa del Sol, in Arroyo de la Miel in the municipality of Benalmádena, about 15 minutes from Málaga airport. It was founded in 1989 on a farm in the mountains above Benalmádena; it later moved to rented premises in central Fuengirola and since autumn 2006 has been in its own new building in Arroyo de la Miel. It is a private school with Norwegian state funding: teaching follows the Norwegian LK20 curriculum and Norwegian education law, and all pupils are Norwegian citizens. The school is approved for 140 pupils and usually has about 30 staff. On top of the Norwegian timetable it teaches Spanish and English in all grades, holds a Spanish culture week and celebrates Norwegian holidays, and spends a lot of time outdoors: a beach day at the start of the year, a ski day, mountain hikes and an annual mountain march. Every morning the leadership greets each pupil at the gate.

The main deadline is 1 February of the year the school year starts; after that, applications received by 1 September are processed while places remain, and admission closes on 30 September. If there are more applicants than places, the order is: current pupils, children of staff, siblings of pupils, children of Norwegian foreign service staff, then a lottery among those who applied on time and among late applicants. A place is secured by paying the enrolment fee within 7 days of the offer. Current pupils confirm their place by 1 December. A refusal can be appealed to the Statsforvalteren.

"Scored on disclosed data" stands where we count only what the school has written about itself on its own site: exams and destinations, safety and wellbeing, teaching staff, facilities, clubs and activities. A low score here means the school does not write about this, not that the school does not have it: a school with good security and a sparse site will score low. A school can fill in its profile, and the score will be counted again.
The score is counted from 8 of the 9 criteria.Only those with checkable data count: programmes and accreditations from official registers, the fee from a published price list. Where it says "scored on the median", the school has no data and the middle of the list is put in its place, so that a gap gives no advantage. Admissions, teaching staff and reviews come in as their data arrives. The full methodology →
