Tauragė Žalgiris Gymnasium grew out of Tauragės 4-oji vidurinė mokykla, opened in 1972 with 1172 students and 39 teachers. In 1996, after Lithuania regained independence, the school was renamed Žalgiris, and from 2009 it began transforming into a gymnasium with an accredited programme. Today it is a public gymnasium of Tauragė District Municipality that teaches only gymnasium grades I-IV (roughly grades 9 to 12): in 2023 these grades had 441 students. The gymnasium emphasises engineering and STEAM subjects, takes part in the 'Millennium School II' project and international student exchanges such as 'My European Classmates.' The school has a social pedagogue, a psychologist and a school doctor, plus a library with an electronic catalogue, a canteen and a school bus.
